"The Weariness of the Self: Diagnosing the History of Depression in the Contemporary Age" is a sociological study by Alain Ehrenberg. This work explores the transformation of depression into a mass phenomenon in the late 20th century, primarily focusing on Western societies.
Ehrenberg argues that the rise in depression cases is linked to the changing nature of society's expectations and individual responsibilities. He suggests that the shift from a society of prohibition, where external constraints guided behavior, to a society of autonomy, where individuals are expected to find their own way, has led to an increase in depression. This transition places a heavy burden on individuals to be successful and self-fulfilling, causing a 'weariness of the self'.
