Young smokers should take heed as I have: if, like me, you find the long-term risks intolerable, it is a disservice to yourself to be fatalistic about the habit - the body, including your lungs, does heal, and it heals best while you're still young and enough time is let to pass.
"Quitting smoking before age 45 was associated with reductions of approximately 90% of the excess mortality associated with continued smoking, and quitting at ages 45 to 64 years was associated with reductions of approximately 66% of this excess risk." https://t.co/DXUd8dMLgO
@constans And I'd say the rules there are actually less forgiving for "autistic weebs." There is a lot of non-verbal signalling and behavioral expectation. People expect you to "read the room" at basically all times and act accordingly, with much less inclination for direct confrontation.
@constans Eh, on the contrary, it's more the expectation that I do not have to feign friendliness or pretend to care about strangers that I prefer about Japanese "politeness." Everyone shares the same scripts about public conduct.
Americans yap and ask "how you're doing." I prefer a bow.
@PaulSkallas To be fair, Israel is far from only country scared of an Iranian nuke.
E.g. the Saudis have long declared they will react to an Iranian nuke by acquiring their own. Proliferation in the region would blossom almost immediately. In comparison, India/Pakistan would be comforting.
Honestly, cigarette prohibition in Australia is probably the most innovative happening within any domestic market in 40 years.
Can you imagine a pack of whatever these are for under $15 even two decades ago?
Absolutely not.
@atlanticesque I don't think refrain is necessarily required. I do think it is more cognitively demanding than may initially seem to engage with LLMs effectively, recreationally or no, so as to e.g. avoid precisely the phenomenon you described in the second post, which I have also experienced.
@phl43 Metacognition is extremely valuable for effective use of A.I. It might even be necessary if you're trying to get it to do things more complicated than entertaining trivia or restaurant recommendations, but even then you want to think carefully to get useful results.
@43blah@AliceFromQueens Estimated nuclear breakout time for Iran that we publicly know of is currently 9-12 months from start to finish. That estimate was made before the war started.
Subject to change with new info, but it does not bode well that since the war started, breakout time remains the same.
@KronosAsvestos Yeah, just buy jewelry at that point. Jewelry is unpretentious about what it is - it just sits there and looks pretty, which is the point.
These guys buy watches because they're also too insecure to wear much else. Half the beauty of a good watch is inside the machine.
@constans There is really nothing quite like it. I found it stimulating in a good way.
I don't know if I would choose to live there over Chicago, but I would sure like to visit more.

@KronosAsvestos The idea that beautiful art has to be derived from suffering is nonsense, but so is this one. The daemons of creativity are ultimately fickle and unaccountable to men.
Well, American advertising and related graphic design largely peaked with tobacco. The Lucky Strike bullseye is singular, as is the Marlboro wordmark.
As time goes on, I wouldn't be shocked to see companies tread the advertising territory already perfected by tobacco brands.
@eris_nerung Well, I've had worse, and I'm a sucker for novelty, especially with alcohol and tobacco. This 30 dollar bottle of cachaca prata I'm looking at hopefully excludes fermented laundry notes.
I've probably missed the drink at certain bars, but it's at least obscure in Chicago.
