Had a wonderful chance to visit a beautiful hidden gem in the heart of Coimbatore ! The Gass Forest Museum, one of India’s most remarkable heritage museums, a living chronicle of Tamil Nadu’s natural history standing proudly for over 120 years. Imagine stepping into a century-old British-Gothic red-stone building that once housed the dreams of Horace Archibald Gass, a passionate forest conservator who, in 1902, began assembling a collection to tell the story of forests and wildlife. Once just a corner of a forest office, his collection grew into thousands of artifacts, lovingly preserved from life-sized taxidermy of majestic Indian wildlife like a huge Indian bison (gaur) presented by royalty, to elegant birds and leopards, a timber library with hundreds of wood species, over 1,000 dazzling insects and butterflies, a preserved baby elephant fetus and full elephant skeleton, tribal tools and hunting weapons. The lovely creatures are being forced out and killed in Coimbatore. In a few years Coimbatore will no longer have Elephants but more tall statues, resorts and what not. All the chaos created in and around the forest is just too much.
