Genome-wide association study in @UK_biobank identifies an interaction between metformin and CUBN gene variant that predisposes to metformin-induced vitamin B12 deficiency in T2D patients. @daniel_f_carr@LivUNIISMIB@dundeeuni@harvardmed https://t.co/5cIInE6dJ1 🔓
So should you measure genotype before prescribing? No of course not - but it can inform on screening intervals if the genotype is known. At the very least our data establishes a causal link between metformin and B12 deficiency and highlights the need for regular B12 measures
Who measures B12 levels in metformin treated patients? With colleagues from Liverpool We’ve published on a large pharmacogenetic effect - where variants in the cubulin gene increase risk of B12 deficiency @DiabetologiaJnl @dundeeuni https://t.co/1gwWi2L39z
The 14% of white population with AA genotype are 2.5 times more likely to require B12 replacement GG. Equates to 10% requiring B12 replacement by 11 years after starting metformin with AA genotype vs 21 years for GG. A large effect!
To prescribe or not to prescribe? #SGLT2 inhibitors slow #CKD progression but it's unclear who with #T2D and mild/no CKD truly benefits. This new model predicts individual benefit, supporting more targeted prescribing. #PrecisionMedicine https://t.co/UaYsA0Ertu 🔓@Exeter_Diabetes

Metabologia
Delighted that the wonderful Jennifer Sargent will be the Editor-in-Chief 👏
@DrRonaldMa1@RAOram@UniofExeter A great paper Ronald! Highlights the need for population specific genetic risk scores for diabetes diagnostic pathways.
🏆It is with great honour that we announce the 57th EASD Claude Bernard Prize recipient, Prof. @athattersley , in recognition of his trailblazing contributions to #diabetes#research and #precisionmedicine.
Congratulations, Prof. Hattersley👏

@DiabetesUK@kamleshkhunti And if you happen to live in Tayside and have diabetes the Exeter 5-drug model is now being used in our iDiabetes precision medicine implementation study https://t.co/fUErHqijtB and https://t.co/fg9YNxmddu
This exciting paper will change how most people with type 2 diabetes are managed - predicting individual level
glycaemic response to glucose lowering drugs. Led by @john_den_ and @athattersley at Exeter (with @dundeeuni@UoDMedicine) https://t.co/8B4RnYzFEA
For those at #dukpc2025#dukpc@diabetesuk@kamleshkhunti Glasgow do come to our session on Thursday at 1115 when we will present this paper and show you how important simple clinical features are to choice of therapy in type 2 diabetes.

@annagloyn I’ve been similarly uncomfortable with X and thinking of stopping using it. I get spammed by musk/trump tweets and their followers (now blocked). Will join you on https://t.co/243nkCIKOg!
