I’m one of those people music doesn’t have to grow on.
From my very first listen, I usually know whether a song connects with me or not. It has been that way for years. The first time I listened to Timeless, I instantly clicked with Picasso. It ended up being one of my favorite songs that year, and that feeling never changed.
The first time I listened to 5ive, I thought a lot of the songs did not land, but I could still point to two or three records that stood out. Even though I was not a fan of the project as a whole, there were still songs that made me want to come back.
Going into ORIADÉ, I genuinely tried to be as fair as possible because I know first impressions can sometimes be misleading. I gave it a proper listen without comparing it to his previous work or expecting a certain sound. Still, after sitting with the album, I honestly could not find a single record that made me want to hit replay.
What stood out to me the most was that some of the features never even needed Davido himself. They felt complete without his presence, which should never be the case on an artist’s own album. Instead of elevating the records, it often felt like he was simply part of them.
The project also feels directionless. It sounds like it is trying so hard not to be average that it forgets to actually be memorable. There is no real escapism, no exploration of new ideas, no bold creative moments, no fresh sonic identity, and no records that give you that instant rush of excitement. Nothing stopped me in my tracks and made me think, “Yeah, this is the one.”
More than anything, the album lacks momentum. It never builds, never surprises, and never creates those moments that stay with you after the music stops. By the time it ends, it feels like everything simply happened without leaving much of an impression.
For an A list artist like Davido, release day felt unusually quiet. There was no feeling of an event, no record that demanded attention, and no moment that felt bigger than the album itself.
To me, the decline is no longer something people are imagining. It is right in front of us.
nevertheless, he spent money on this album
a 2/10 is total over fair for the rating 💛
