Q6: Given the recent COVID-19 pandemic and the call for higher ed admin to restructure health requirements, how could this benefit the call to destigmatize mental health issues on college campuses? #SDPIChat
A4: An example of that is how thousands of us were able to transition to telecommuting within the first few weeks of the pandemic. As a result, I believe employers now have more trust that their employees will get the job done, without overworking them. #SDPIChat
Q4: Audre Lorde has said “self care is political warfare;” how can we transition to a place where self care doesn’t function as resistance to societal norms (i.e. overworking, individualism, capitalistic notions, etc.)? #SDPIChat
@SDPInstitute A3: Establishing right off the bat that mental health is one of the most important things! Allowing extensions on work, being approachable & understanding, & normalizing these conversations is the best you can do for your students. #SDPIchat

In my culture mental health is something that is not acknowledge and if it is, it is negatively portrayed. Being in higher education and being first generation I had to deal with these challenges sometimes alone. Seeking resources on my own. However this taught me independence.
@jacouriecheyon @SDPInstitute Great point! Intergenerational trauma disproportionately affects students of color and this is often overlooked by resources!
A1 I believe that mental health days are a form of self-care. Departments in education should acknowledge that it is necessary for people to have mental health days especially during these times. Many people have had to deal with ancestral wounds alongside living in a pandemic.
Self-care has become an act of political resistance to the stigmatization of mental health. How can we move toward caring for oneself not being an act of resistance and, rather, acts of self-care being normalized in our society? #SDPIChat
@SDPInstitute The already existing lack of connection in the academic space has increased because many faculty are not well-versed in online instruction. Couple this with students' lack of confidence regarding online learning and the magnitude of the problem becomes clearer. @SDPIchat
