A black person shouldn’t have to be perfect or extraordinary or a college grad or a parent in order to explain why they deserved to not be shot by a police officer. This is a simple concept.
Jacob Blake defied odds to survive an unjustified assault by police. But with each of these acts of unabashed brutality, we, the broad and beautiful Black diaspora collectively die a little more, suffocating under the unjust burden placed upon our shoulders. We. Can’t. Breathe.

@SDPInstitute Know you're not alone. There's so many people who feel the same way you do. Take advantage of the resources you have that are available to you because you are a college student. Your school has professional therapists who give real, confidential advice. Take advantage. #SDPICHat
@SDPInstitute It's helpful because it at least puts it in the conversation to allow the reframing to begin. It makes it present on our minds and may engage people in the thought around what self care is who hadn't considered it before. Then, we can then help them personalize it. #SDPIChat
@SDPInstitute The bottom line is that you can't help anyone if you're not here. Self care allows you to do just that. Self care begins with self love and knowing that you're worth the care. Every bit of time and energy it takes to not only maintain, but be whole. #SDPICHat
@SDPInstitute A3: Speak of it in regular conversation. Engage them in real world examples of how mental health helped people overcome personal and professional struggles. I drive personal stories and allow them to share so we can all grow. #SPDIChat
@kinspire2 @SDPInstitute@fabiolasantos44 This is very true. We have to be aware of our level of stress and pull away when we need to. This took a while for me to learn. #SDPIChat
@SDPInstitute A2: Encourage visiting the campus counseling centers for things like the loss of a loved one, insomnia, feelings of overwhelm. This may seem small, but the more students feel comfortable discussing their feelings, their more likely to seek help when it is more serious. #SDPIChat
@SDPInstitute Regularly share ways to engage in self care and be open about how we all need support at different times. Secrets and shame only keep us bound. #SDPIChat
RIL @repjohnlewis and Ruby Doris Smith Robinson. Because of them, I live with freedoms I would have never known without their sacrifice. The fight continues.
My aunt, Ruby Doris Smith Robinson, then @SpelmanCollege student, spent nearly 3 months in jail in Jackson, Miss as a Freedom Rider. She was one of the founders of SNCC and died at 26, before I was born. @repjohnlewis cried each time he spoke of her bravery to me. #GoodTrouble
