@SDPInstitute A3: GSOC experience the pressure to “keep up” with academia. Managing their workload, social life, & finances while juggling external pressures that come along with their identity. Without a network you may miss tangible/intangible opps, resources, etc. #SPDIChat
A6: I haven't yet, but I would love to do it in person. My loved ones can join by Zoom #SPDIChat
Q6: The dissertation defense represents the culmination of a rigorous journey. Are there advantages/disadvantages to a virtual defense? If you have defended, what advice would you give to scholars to prepare for the oral defense? #SDPIChat
Q2: I have learned that much of my "need to read one more paper" is impostor syndrome, and I am calling myself out more frequently #SPDIChat
Q2: What have you learned about yourself on a personal level and as a scholar while going through the different phases of the dissertation in the pandemic? #SDPIChat
@ThrivePhD Totally.
I think that this highlights a major value that coaching brings many people. A lot of my work is to ask questions that support people to flip their thinking & consider the proactive side of values & boundaries - what they DO want & what success looks like.

@ThrivePhD Your response about pushing for clarity and on boundaries really resonates with my experience and the experience of many of the folks I coach. #SPDIChat
A4: On a personal note (bc the personal is professional & vice-versa) I've learned to really prioritize myself/my needs. Pre-pandemic I said I'd move anywhere/do anything for a TT job. Now I know the importance (for me) of living where I want to/making a living wage. #SPDIChat
Q4: How has the pandemic impacted the way you approach career planning and professional development? #SDPIChat
@ThrivePhD @SDPInstitute Absolutely! Plus it can be really disheartening when someone clearly thinks you are making a "mistake". You don't need that in your life! #SPDIChat
Also joining us is Visiting Scholar for the @SDPInstitute Clarissa Sparks (Sparks_Company)! #SPDIChat
@SDPInstitute I enjoyed participating in my first Twitter chat. Thank you @SDPInstitute and @Sharayamorrison for this invitation. I learned so much from the other #SPDIChat panelists.
A7: I hope that we emerge from this experience truly changed. Let's be open to all learning styles. Let's continue learning new things. Let's remain "connected" to our students. #SPDIChat
I wish we could keep it going forever (!), but this is the last question.
Q7: How will this shift to remote learning affect the higher education landscape moving forward? What are some lessons learned from COVID related to access for all students? #SDPIChat
@hacker_nl @SDPInstitute @DigPedLab @Jessifer @slamteacher Thx for sharing these resources! #onlinelearning #SPDIChat
A5: One challenge is contacting faculty during virtual office hours. Which days? What times? Which online platform? Let's make this clear in our syllabi and share with students via email & remind them at every synchronous class session. #SPDIChat
Incredible resources! Thank you all for sharing! We love hearing from you! 😍

Q5: How might the transition from face-to-face learning to remote learning negatively impact low-income students’ academic opportunities? #SDPIChat
A2: The gap between students on either side of the "digital divide" will grow even wider. I've read about some rural school districts driving a school bus with "WiFi" onboard to neighborhoods so that students whose homes are nearby can get access. #SPDIChat
Q2: How may remote learning influence the academic success of students who are impacted by the “Digital Divide,” or the gap between those who do or do not have access to the technology and Wi-fi? #SDPIChat
@SDPInstitute A1: School leaders are having a tough time reconciling what their district leaders are asking of them with what will keep students and educators at their schools safe. The emotional toll on all involved needs to be addressed. #SPDIChat
A1. What I hope to see vs what I expect to see may be two different things. I hope that institutions use this time to reflect on how institutional racism manifests in their hiring, retention, and promotion practices, as well as in their grad programs (future faculty) #SPDIChat
Q1: Higher ed is facing unprecedented challenges from COVID-19. Institutions are also being held to account for their role in systemic racism. What changes do you expect to see to the composition of the professoriate as a result of these two forces? #SDPIChat
It can be very difficult for first gen students to normalize the college experience in relation to their lived experiences. How do you enjoy something you don't understand? #SPDIChat
Q1: What are some of the challenges/hardships that first-generation college students experience throughout their college experience? #SDPIChat
We can not repeat enough times that one size does not fit all/one experience does not define students #SPDIChat
However, if students, faculty, and staff were to value the unique cultural capital that many first-generation students of color possess, they can gain a better understanding of how these students successfully navigate educational systems. #SDPIChat
