JUST IN: Visa is in late-stage talks to acquire crypto custody firm Fireblocks for around $2.5 billion, according to Axios.

@TheBlockCo In the quarter to June 30, 2026:
> Visa spent $0 on acquisitions
> $4.81B buying back its own stock.
It held $12.36B in cash, down 27.7% in a year (Visa 10-Q).
At around $2.5B, Fireblocks would cost about half of one quarter's buybacks.

• NYDFS-regulated qualified custodian

Visa buying Fireblocks would be a loud signal: card networks don't just want to route stablecoin payments, they want to own the custody and settlement layer underneath.
At around $2.5B, far below Fireblocks' 2022 $8B valuation, this could be a bargain entry for Visa. https://t.co/hWcAzwDaAx @SignalWeek
Fireblocks raised at $8B in 2022. Visa might get it for around $2.5B. TradFi isn't buying the hype, it's buying the pipes. At a discount.
Visa in Talks to Acquire Fireblocks for ~$2.5 Billion to Expand Crypto Presence
According to Axios, Visa is in talks to acquire crypto custody infrastructure firm Fireblocks in a deal that would value the company at around $2.5 billion. If finalized, the transaction would further expand Visa's footprint in digital asset custody and blockchain-based payment infrastructure. The reports remain subject to further confirmation, and the specific terms and progress of the acquisition negotiations have not been disclosed.

Visa is not sitting this one out. $V is in advanced talks to buy Fireblocks for about $2.5B, per @Axios, in what would be its first stablecoin acquisition. Fireblocks helps companies hold, tokenize & move digital assets, & Visa wants that plumbing inside its network. That is a big tell. @Visa #Stablecoins #Fintech

The number to carry is the discount. Fireblocks was valued near $8B in its 2022 round. At $2.5B it sells for roughly a third of that.
That is not TradFi paying up for crypto infrastructure. It is TradFi buying it below the last mark, from a company that needed the exit more than the price.
Visa is not joining the crypto trade. It is buying the exit from it.
@BitcoinArchive Worth a footnote. Fireblocks raised $550m in its Series E in January 2022 at an $8bn valuation. If the reported $2.5bn holds, Visa gets it for roughly 31 cents on the dollar of that round. TradFi isn't coming for crypto, it's shopping the clearance rack.
Visa is in late-stage talks to buy Fireblocks for ~$2.5bn (Axios)
That is roughly 70% below the $8bn valuation Fireblocks raised at in 2022.
Fireblocks runs custody and wallet infrastructure for 2,400+ institutions, including BNY Mellon and BNP Paribas, and says it has secured over $10tn in transfers. It has become the biggest player in digital asset custody.
But increasingly it's expanding in more directions and product cross-sell, while underneath, competitors like DFNS are winning market share and mind share. Fireblocks hasn't raised in a while.
Visa's stablecoin settlement crossed a $20bn annualized run rate in September, up 15x in a year, with 160+ stablecoin-linked card programs live. They're arguably ahead on stablecoin-linked cards.
Then Mastercard bought BVNK, Visa's settlement and OTC partner. While Fireblocks isn't a like-for-like (Visa now partners with many in that space), it does take custody, arguably a harder piece to do in-house.
And the strategy here is fascinating to observe
To my mind, Visa wants to be the provider of choice for any FI going onchain, especially the big banks. Fireblocks is a large book of enterprise clients and fits exactly where I think Visa is going.
Cards are where stablecoins drive Visa today.
As settlement for non-card payments starts to go onchain, Visa needs the wallet and custody plumbing underneath those flows. Fireblocks then looks like a logical play.
Visa gets the enterprise relationships and the plumbing in one deal. Fireblocks customers now have a custody vendor owned by a card network, and some exchanges and Mastercard-aligned banks will think twice. DFNS and the rest now compete with a vendor that has Visa's sales team already inside the big banks.
It reminds me that Standard Chartered also said it would take full ownership of Zodia Custody.
Digital asset custody is consolidating into the incumbents.
Visa paid $2bn for CyberSource in 2010 to own the e-commerce gateway. (Arguably no longer *the default* gateway, but certainly one that's very successful at least in part due to Visa's market distribution).
This is that play for onchain.
For Fireblocks, this is a down round and a half if it happens. But not dissimilar from what we've seen in SaaS with bending spoons. A lot of companies got bid up high in the 2021 era, and no matter how successful and how much revenue they pile on, it's still big shoes to fill.
Fireblocks is a talent team, so I wish them well if this is true or not. Either way. Keep doing things.
Visa and Fireblocks both sponsor tokenized, but as you'd hopefully imagine, I have no insight or color on this from either team and haven't spoken to anyone there about it.

fireblocks raised at an $8B valuation in 2022. now @Visa is in late stage talks to buy @FireblocksHQ for around $2.5B, per axios via @WuBlockchain
that's a ~69% markdown on one of the biggest custody names in crypto, and it still counts as a good exit. the 2022 investors get paid in visa money, just a lot less of it
Secondo Bloomberg, Visa sarebbe pronta ad acquistare Fireblocks, che si occupa di custodia crypto.
E sei ancora bearish sul settore?

@TheBlockCo visa would plug fireblocks’ custody api into its payment network so banks can settle stablecoin trades natively, turning fireblocks into a bridge between fiat and crypto
A Visa acquisition of Fireblocks would be incredibly interesting to watch.
1. Stablecoins are the future.
2. Fireblocks is the primary platform for OUSD. So now Visa has has a lot more control over that project which (to me) makes it a lot less interesting.
3. Many of the people that use Fireblocks today probably view Visa as competition (or the enemy) at some level. If Fireblocks is your primary wallet solution, moving away from it is pretty painful, so interesting to see how sticky those customers are.
4. TradFi companies looking to "self custody" with a wallet-as-a-service provider are a lot more likely to trust Visa than a crypto native provider they have never heard of.
