@SDPInstitute .A7 Would love to see more faculty/admin honor Indigenous presence/brilliance within their institutions. Given the history/impact of settler colonialism & slavery, it would be fitting for ALL to commit to the work of destroying barriers for AI/AN students & others #SDPIChat
A7: Focus on indiv. school climate/culture 2 understand what impacts qualified SOC perceptions of grad school. What are the reasons that GSOC do or do not pursue graduate education? How do we increase awareness/access? What barriers have they faced while in undergrad? #SDPIChat
@SDPInstitute A6: One example are schools that have implemented summer programs geared towards helping students transition to graduate education. These efforts can be expanded by better 💰💰 & spaces intentionally made for GSOC to connect esp. w/ distance learning #SDPIChat
A5: DECENTER WHITENESS! Center students where they're at to co-create knowledge and praxis. Decolonize syllabi, policies, practices etc within programs/institutions. #SDPIChat
@SDPInstitute A5: I think there could be more attention on GSOC transitions into grad programs. Institutions can examine how students who take time off adapt, help GSOC understand what a Ph.D. entails, explore job outcomes, or offer graduate prep courses for interested SOC #SDPIChat
@SDPInstitute A4: Based on my experience, I would contribute this to professors that students are able to connect and engage with, without them I don’t think that I would be on this path!❤️ #SDPIChat
@SDPInstitute A3: GSOC experience the pressure to “keep up” with academia. Managing their workload, social life, & finances while juggling external pressures that come along with their identity. Without a network you may miss tangible/intangible opps, resources, etc. #SPDIChat
A2: For me, I applied to graduate school b/c the organization I was a part of would not hire me for leadership roles as I did not have a graduate degree. I knew then that I needed to figure out how to continue creating an impact & support students on a greater scale. #SDPIChat
@SDPInstitute A2: I wanted to academically encourage BLK stdt athletes after my experience as an athlete. I had ?s about why they only saw their athletic abilities + I was encouraged by a few professors in undergrad @WilliamPennU , l8r got a job, wanted to do more but needed more 🧠 #SDPIChat
@SDPInstitute A1: It allows SOC to reimagine education spaces where they can participate confidently with their unique intellectual expertise and cultural capital. Higher ed institutions are ill-equipped to promote graduate education because of exclusionary policies and practices #SDPIChat
