Happy to share my new working paper, "Monetary Production Theory and the Threshold Structure of Financial Crises." Why do financial crises recur with such persistence across centuries and institutional environments? A thread 🧵

How can presidents advance their policy agenda with broad-based parties?
My latest article explores one possible answer: the internal organization of governing parties.

Thomas Paine publishes an open letter in the Pennsylvania Evening Post, under the name “Republicus,” which advocates for the name “United States of America” for the new nation now emerging.
This is the first time such a term has been used.
Some notable quotes from this document:
“A long habit of not thinking a thing wrong gives it a ſuperficial appearance of being right, and raiſes at firſt a formidable outcry in defence of cuſtom.
But the tumult ſoon ſubſides. Time makes more converts than reaſon.”

“Society is produced by our wants, and government by wickedneſs; the former promotes our happineſs poſitively by uniting our affections, the latter negatively by reſtraining our vices.
The one encourages intercourſe, the other creates diſtinctions. The first is a patron, the last a puniſher.”

“Society in every ſtate is a bleſsing, but government even in its best ſtate is but a neceſsary evil; in its worst ſtate an intolerable one; for when we ſuffer, or are expoſed to the ſame miſeries by a government, which we might expect in a country without government, our calamity is heightened by reflecting that we furniſh the means by which we ſuffer.”
Engliſh-born American writer and revolutionary Thomas Paine publiſhes a new radical pamphlet, “COMMON SENSE” which urges treaſon against the Crown.
It is a popular piece to read aloud in taverns, in boiſterous, drunken voices.
Here's a mind-blowing statistic: despite making up just ~0.2% of the global population, players with ethnic heritage from the former Yugoslavia are 7.5% of players in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 (overrepresented by 40x) and play for 9/32 or 28% of teams! -> 🇭🇷🇧🇦🇦🇹🇦🇺🇨🇭🇺🇸🇨🇦🇸🇪🇩🇪
