The whole world has been watching Muslims bow down during the World Cup. Here’s why. 

There are moments in our lives that are so big they feel beyond us, like: How did I do that? 

Those triumphs can feel like an out-of-body experience: your chest tightens, your eyes fill with tears, and your legs feel weak. 

Sajdat al-shukr, the prostration of gratitude,answers that feeling. 

The practice goes all the way back to Prophet Muhammad (s), who would fall into prostration whenever good news reached him. [Sunan Ibn Majah #1394]

Fourteen centuries later, in stadiums packed with 70,000+ people, that same gesture is still made not simply as a celebration but as a thank-you to Allah, the one true God. 

In that moment of pure awe and excitement, Muslims recognize that their success came only from God and by His permission. 

They humble themselves and submit fully to their core belief of Allahu Akbar, or Allah is greater than every single thing they can ever imagine or experience. 

And the deepest way to express that gratitude and devotion is by putting the highest part of their bodies on the lowest point of the earth.

In sajdat al-shukr, the players leave it all behind—the world’s noise and the crowd’s cheer, the glory and the fame—to thank the One who gave them this moment.

I always think about the simple Egyptian fruit seller who realized aid trucks were headed to Gaza and started throwing fruit onto them. Coach Hossam exemplified that sincerity yesterday. The deep love that this Ummah has for Palestine unites us, and the disconnect is only between the streets and the politics, not the people.
