Osaka Namba indeed looks really dumpy these days. It's historically always been known as a fun eating, drinking, and shopping area but now it's really just lots of foreigners and drugstores and chain restaurants everywhere.

On the drugstores: Chinese people love them and you can always see groups of them buying Japanese products (cosmetics, etc) in bulk. It's common these days (in Namba at least) to see Chinese speaking staff working there as well.

A possible side effect of the increase in drugstores over recent years: Japanese drugstores have become popular shoplifting targets by Vietnamese gangs and cases of Japanese youth abusting OTC drugs have exploded
