A ground invasion would have been horrifically bloody on all sides, but Japan was scraping the bottom of the barrel for soldier simply because of raw numbers already. The US would have won because we had more soldiers and more equipment, but it would have been horror beyond imagining.

All one has to do to confirm that is look at the training the Japanese government was giving to the civilians. Non-combatants were being trained to charged armed soldiers with melee weapons. That was only going to end one way, and the nuclear bombs were, sadly, the least bloody way to end the war for even the Japanese people.

In the middle of the night once a very high person looking for their friend “knocked” on my door like he was trying to break it down.

I opened the door with a friendly demeanor and attempted (successfully) to de-escalate the situation and suggest he search elsewhere. My wife was just out of view with a shotgun in case it didn’t work out.

A good partner is the greatest blessing in life.
