What do Mentally TOUGH Players do?
▪️They are never a victim
▪️They never feel sorry for themselves
▪️They are NOT entitled
▪️They do not complain
▪️They do not cast blame
▪️They are not afraid to confront or challenge
▪️They celebrate their teammates successes
Saban didn’t win 7 titles by accident.
He reminded his players every day:
Entitlement? Nothing.
Somebody owes you? Nothing.
Lose your discipline? Nothing.
NOTHING is more important than being your best.
That’s the standard.
Class and Respect.
Too many coaches are allowing players to act like fools.
Playing with class should be required.
Respecting opponents should be required.
Respecting umpires should be required.
Respecting the game should be required.
Watching a team play with class and respect shouldn't be refreshing.
It should be expected.
Holding players accountable is uncomfortable for both coaches and players.
But having players fail because you won't coach, confront, or correct them, is unacceptable!
What is the path to playing time?
- Team-first
- Be a competitor
- Positive attitude
- Make hustle plays
- A winning mindset
- Bring positive energy
- Do more than expected
- Be a communicator on the court.
Control the controllable.
“Energy” isn’t yelling at your opponent or being overly “rah-rah”. Focus and intent are energy. Being on the top step (or on the fence) engaged in the game is energy. Sprinkle in some dugout shenanigans and rituals and you’ve got the recipe for what energy should look like.
The "yes, yes, yes" or "yes, yes,NO" mindset is crucial for success & must be trained.
🔑 to training this:
1. Proper 👁 use (emphasize 👁 patterns & seeing ball out of hand)
2. Give enough time to reset between pitches
3. Utilize live arm mixed BP & THROW BALLS not just strikes!
After all the games I’ve watched this week, one thing remains true.
Hitting the ball on the ground and hoping the defense makes a mistake is still the most efficient offensive strategy at the high school level!
