Fantastic picture of all 263 current women MPs! We're delighted that so many of them (187) are Labour women, and that 100 of those are LWN graduates. LWN training really works! #IWD2025
Today, I wrote to the Sentencing Council to express my strong opposition to its newly published guidelines, which recommend different treatment based on ethnicity, culture and faith.
This new guidance came from a consultation carried out under the previous Conservative Government. The last Government supported the new guidelines and raised no objections. It is shameless for the Conservatives to pretend they were never consulted.
The Sentencing Council is independent. Its new guidance does not represent my views or those of this Government. Ministers in this Government were not involved in the consultation. We did not approve this guidance.
I have asked the Sentencing Council to reconsider this guidance urgently. I have also asked them to meet with me to discuss the way forward. I am also reviewing the Sentencing Councilโs role and its powers. I will review whether Ministers and Parliament should have greater powers here too.
If new laws are required, I will not hesitateย toย legislate.
