In:
-billions of dollars for public education and transportation
-free school lunches
-fare-free public transit
-tuition-free public college
-4% tax on income over $1 million a year
Out:
-upside down tax systems that only benefit the ultra-rich
Massachusetts voted Yes on Question 1 in 2022, creating an additional tax of 4% for income over $1 million, in addition to the existing 5% flat-rate income tax, and dedicate revenue to education and transportation purposes.
Yes - 1,232,662 - 52%
No - 1,137,642 - 48%
That’s because of a $62 million expansion in financial aid for students at public colleges—and that $62 million is directly raised by the Fair Share Amendment’s 4% tax on income over $1M per year.

Today, the Fair Share Amendment is making it easier to go to college.
If you’re eligible for a Pell Grant, you now also qualify for tuition- and fee-free education at a MA community college, public university, or UMass.
One third of all UMass students qualify for free tuition.
Exactly one year ago, MA passed the Fair Share Amendment.
The ultra-rich pay 4% more on income over $1 million. We put billions of dollars directly into education and transportation. In 2023, the Fair Share Amendment raised over $1 BILLION.
We believe that’s called a “win-win.”
I wrote about the inspiring @FairShareMA campaign. A broad labor-community coalition won a ballot measure to tax the rich and fund public services!

Unions, teachers, health care workers, and people across Massachusetts came together to take on a tough fight. And now millionaires will pay a fair share to fund roads, bridges, transit, and public education. Woo-hoo, @FairShareMA!

At the @FairShareMA victory press conference, and it is impressive to think that this victory was 100-years in the making.
We have had a constitutional flat tax for > 100 years. There have been five past times to change that, and each failed.
But we finally won. #mapoli
This victory is this coalition's victory. The @RaiseUpMA coalition, the union members, local businesses, teachers, the organizers, the campaign team, the volunteers, everyone who worked on this campaign and was part of this team. This victory is all of ours.
Grateful for all the incredible people who have fought so hard for so long on @FairShareMA & @yesonfourma.
Our communities are worthy of deep investments in public education & infrastructure.
And our roads are safer when immigrants don’t have to live in fear.
We all win.
If anyone wants to make an Election Day impact, my personal favorite GOTV activity is phone-banking. Best way to calm pre-results nerves and know you're making an impact turning out every last vote. Phonebank for @FairShareMA this afternoon: https://t.co/0UpLoCWcRz
