People keep asking me about my take on the “Firewall”. Well here it is:

There’s little in this new “firewall” that was not already possible for PTA to do for last decade. And there is nothing here that not been done in any country that is emerging or developed including India, UK, USA. Firewall is a bad name for it. A firewall is a technology induced barrier between trusted and untrusted networks to thwart attackers and malicious actors. That is a part of what we have because we need cyber defense, but actually a small part. For us this is the third generation of a tech stack that allows security agencies with constitutional and legal cover to filter and trace online communications to identify unlawful activities as defined by existing laws. This tech stack is a combination of hardware and software (also called applications) that does 3 main things:
1. “Lawful Intercept” (also called targeted surveillance)
2. Mass surveillance
3. Cyber Defence

An actual Firewall is a part of this tech stack under component number 3. Keep in mind a hardware or application software can have footprint across all these 3 areas.

The first generation of “firewall” Pakistan had was elite Canadian tech but it was weak with messengers. Typically that tech could also track over 100 different VPN services, as well as standard VPN protocols so they can use traffic patterns to catch services that they don’t identify uniquely or have in their database. This was a part of their standard application identification solution. All targets are always in sight. You just flip the switch and you can block VPN’s. I suspect this part of tech is worse in new tech we are using. I mean it can do it but affects speed.

Second generation was Chinese that overpromised and under delivered. I can only surmise it was torpedoed by incompetence or corruption.

This third generation is essentially to fix that. My understanding is that architecturally all internet traffic in country is/ can be mirrored & routed to a dedicated analytics unit that will filter at different network levels like:
DNS
URL
QoS

This is complimented by robust analytics software that uses tech like DPI (Deep Packet Inspection). It gives you so much information in breadth and depth that it can help you identify sender of data and recipients of data. It can also block access to parts of the internet including social media, websites and messengers.

Right now they are beta testing it so you notice issues but when in operation you will not notice a difference except maybe QoS and speeds will get affected if they architect this wrong. This has been my biggest concern consistently. Don’t mess with latency and speed.
