Press Freedom in 2026: A Dinner That Raised More Questions Than It Answered

American press freedom in 2026 apparently means many journalists sit quietly while the president tells them, at their own dinner, that they have treated him unfairly.

President Trump said reporters would be “broke” without him, criticized journalists by name, commented on Kaitlan Collins’s appearance and asked her to smile. He also criticized political opponents and joked about running for a third term.

President’s relationship with the press has long been tense. He has called major outlets “fake news,” filed lawsuits against media companies and accused journalists of unfair coverage. Saudi Arabia may receive US nuclear technology for 30 years, with a possible path to enriching uranium after a two-year review. Washington would sell the technology, supervise the agreement, decide whether enrichment is permitted and act as guarantor.

So the supplier is also the inspector, referee and gatekeeper.

Greenland is not a gift, a concession, or a repayment for past security guarantees. It is sovereign territory whose people and government have consistently refused any transfer. Treating membership itself as a debt that can be collected in land undermines the very principle NATO claims to defend—mutual respect among equals, not hierarchical extraction.
An alliance that requires one member to surrender territory to keep the others interested is already broken. The demand does not strengthen deterrence; it advertises that American commitment is transactional and revocable the moment the price is not paid in soil.
If the price of collective defense is the forced transfer of another ally’s land, what exactly is being defended?

Who’s in charge of International Straits?

Many of President Trump’s proposed solutions to the conflict with Iran seem to have been thought up on the spot. He briefly suggested that the US could charge tolls on ships entering the strait in exchange for safe passage, despite European leaders and even US Secretary of State Rubio, having previously said these would be incompatible with international law. The fact the US and Iran have even proposed such tolls is a sign of the wilful disregard for international law that has become a defining feature of this conflict.

Freedom of navigation is a cornerstone of international law: without it, shipping starts to resemble a protection racket, where nations extract fees from passing vessels.

Some experts now worry that other shipping routes could become more militarised, as coastal nations watching Iran use the strait as the ultimate bargaining chip try to take advantage of other important waterways and could use passageways as a deterrent.

If powerful countries can attack others at any time, those under attack will do whatever it takes to protect themselves. Who really benefits from this international chaos? Who gains when international law is ignored and global institutions lose their power?

Canada is standing its ground:

After President Trump threatened to impose new 50% tariffs on a wide range of Canadian goods, Canada has refused to back down. One of its responses has been a boycott of U.S. alcohol, which reportedly contributed to a 70% drop in U.S. alcohol exports to Canada between 2024 and 2025, costing the industry about $536 million (Financial Times).

The lesson is simple: reciprocity works.

If the U.S. uses tariffs and economic pressure against its allies, it should expect an equal response. Partnerships cannot be built on the assumption that one side absorbs the costs while the other dictates the terms.

The bigger issue is trust. Many Canadians now say they feel betrayed after decades of alliance with Washington. Trade disputes can eventually be resolved, but rebuilding confidence between allies is far more difficult.

The democratic world is stronger when its allies work together. But genuine alliances require mutual respect. If the U.S. wants to preserve the trust and loyalty it built over the past eighty years, it cannot expect them to survive unilateral tariffs, economic coercion, and repeated pressure on its closest partners.
