August 15 once again exposed a painful reality: when innocent citizens are attacked for simply bringing flowers to Dhanmondi 32, it is not merely an assault on individuals it is an assault on memory, history and the spirit of Bangladesh.
The reported violence against ordinary people and a humble rickshaw puller seeking to pay tribute to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman reflects a disturbing attempt to silence remembrance through fear and force. Yet history cannot be bulldozed away, nor can the legacy of the Liberation War be erased through intimidation.
Dhanmondi 32 may have been reduced to ruins, but the history attached to it remains alive in the hearts of millions. Those who seek to erase that history may control streets, deploy force or threaten imprisonment but they cannot erase a name that has become inseparable from the story of Bangladesh.
You can destroy a house. You can silence a voice. But you cannot demolish history.

State sponsored terror during #BNP_Jamaat Regime
• JMB chief Siddiqul Islam, nicknamed Bangla Bhai was first arrested along with five others for attacking an Awami League leader in Mollarhat in Bagerhat on August 17, 2002.
• Police dropped BanglaBhai's name from a charge sheet and no specific charges were brought against the rest. Rather, police termed him 'an Islamic scholar'. All the criminals were later freed.
• A day after the August 17 serial blast, Lutfor Rahman was caught by police at Thakurgaon for suspected links to the bombings. Although he was arrested twice in 2000 and 2001 for taking military training, police released him under pressure from BNP leadres.
• Between 2001 and 2005, at least 500 Islamist militants were left off the hook and yet no specific charges were brought against them.
• 41 Harkat-ul Jihad (Huji) operatives, arrested during Awami League tenure in 1996, received bail from the High Court without strong objection from the prosecution after the BNP-led coalition came to power.
• On April 25, 2003, 7 JMB militants were arrested in Bogra but police let them go without filing any case against them.
• On September 20, 2003, police arrested 18 militants led by Abdur Rouf, who fought in the Afghan war, in Boalmari while taking training but they were all released that day.

On August 17, 2005, Bangladesh witnessed an unprecedented wave of coordinated terrorism.
At least 459 time bombs exploded across 63 of the country’s 64 districts within roughly 30 minutes. The attacks killed two people and injured more than 100, while triggering widespread panic across the country.
The banned Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) claimed responsibility through leaflets calling for the implementation of Islamic law and rejecting “man-made law.” The blasts targeted government offices, courts, public institutions and other prominent locations, demonstrating the breadth of the militant network.
From Dhaka to Chattogram, Rajshahi, Khulna, Sylhet, Barishal and beyond, ordinary people were caught in a carefully coordinated campaign of terror.
The August 17 bombings remain a stark reminder that violent extremism can exploit political and institutional weaknesses to threaten an entire society. Bangladesh must never forget the victims—or the lessons of one of the most shocking days in its history.

From the blood of 1971 to the tragedy of 15 August 1975, Bangladesh’s journey has never been an easy one. In her address, Sheikh Hasina presented that journey not merely as a story of political struggle, but as a battle between two visions of Bangladesh one rooted in democracy, secularism, development and religious harmony, and another threatened by violence, extremism and political instability.
She began with the deepest wound of her life: the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of her family on 15 August 1975. Surviving in Germany, living in exile and eventually returning home in 1981, she described her political life as a responsibility born from sacrifice the responsibility to carry forward Bangabandhu’s dream of a prosperous and poverty-free Bangladesh.
She highlighted the transformation she attributed to Awami League governments: food security, expanded electricity generation, improved education and healthcare, poverty reduction, economic growth and the strengthening of institutions against terrorism and extremism. Bangladesh, in her narrative, moved from vulnerability toward confidence and development.
But she argued that the country entered a new and dangerous chapter during the upheaval of 2024. She alleged that violence, attacks on law-enforcement institutions, prison breaks, attacks on minorities and religious and cultural institutions, and the re-emergence of extremist elements weakened the foundations of the state. She questioned whether justice could truly be achieved when investigations were suspended and those responsible for violence were allegedly protected.
The heart of her message was therefore a warning and a vision.
Bangladesh, she argued, cannot build its future by destroying its past. It cannot achieve freedom through fear, democracy through violence, or progress through extremism.
The Bangladesh she envisioned is one where Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Christians, indigenous communities and every citizen can live with equal dignity; where political power changes through the ballot box rather than the street; where development is protected rather than dismantled; and where justice belongs to victims, not to whoever holds power.

Bangladesh does not need another cycle of destruction. It needs restoration of democracy, constitutional order, religious harmony, security and the promise of a prosperous future.
For her, protecting that Bangladesh is not simply a political mission. It is a continuation of the unfinished dream for which generations of Bangladeshis sacrificed.
