In the corpus Novels by Charles Dickens, standing with your "back to the fire" is a gendered action. In the photo we can see it is always preceded by "he".

We also notice, that the only time a woman stands with her back to the fire she is compared to a man!#ENGL256BF22

It is fascinating how much you can tell about a text just by distant reading it!

We searched the word "eat" in the book Wuthrting Heights and we could tell without actually reading it that the characters don't actually eat in the book.

In "The Three of US" Crothers' tackled the issue of the double standard when it comes to conduct expected from men and women.
I especially loved the ending which can be seen as undermining the double standard.

Really recommend reading it!

I really enjoyed analyzing Crother's play "The Three of US" with my group using Voyant Tools. I also close read the play and I really loved how close reading and distant reading complement each other.
