🌱 Turning Marginal Land into Opportunity
Did you know 5-10% of cultivated farmland in Western Canada may be marginal — land that costs more to farm than what it produces? Olds College has teamed up with Farm Credit Canada to change that.
For the past three years, researchers at the Olds College Smart Farm have been working on ways to identify and manage marginal land more profitably. Instead of trying to force crops out of areas where it’s not cost-effective, they’re experimenting with precision conservation, including planting perennial grasses, legumes and pollinator habitats.
The project runs through 2027, and the goal is to help farmers make data-driven decisions about when it pays more to restore land, convert it or use it differently — boosting both profitability and sustainability.
👍 This kind of work matters — for farmers, for ecosystems and for resilient food systems.

Seeking Hail Reports #abstorm: Two supercells tracked across Alberta yesterday with one impacting north Calgary and the other impacting Okotoks and regions to the east. These storms produced large damaging hail (see MRMS #hail swath below).
Please send us your hail reports!
Top 10! 🎉 Olds College of Agriculture & Technology is celebrating our place in Canada’s Top 50 Research Colleges! Our hard-working #OCSmartFarm researchers even took a moment to speak about it: https://t.co/g1FkXWD97k

The #OCSmartFarm Team is looking for local, hail-damaged fields to help with an applied research project! The research team is sampling fields stressed from hail damage and potentially high in nitrates. Email [email protected] if you would like to participate. #AbStorm
Come learn from the @canolacouncil about local sclerotinia risk on the #OldsCollege Smart Farm. Visit field 19 on July 13 at 2:30 pm to learn about canola and sclerontinia assessment tools! View the interactive map for field 19 https://t.co/Lv0l46YSDM
@MdmCurt@spornadosampler@2020SeedLabs For our research we are aiming for test increments of 3-4 days per cassette. And yes, they suggest that with rain days to extend the exposure period. The ones I installed today, are planned to be swapped and sent in on Monday morning.
Canola on the @OldsCollege#SmartFarm is starting to bolt, which kicks off the beginning of our @spornadosampler research trial! The project includes using weather stations to correlate wind vs sclerotinia spore loads captured on the Spornado cassette.
Interested in learning more about the Spornado and local sclerotinia risk for this year?! Come join us and the @canolacouncil for a field day near Olds on July 13th! DM me for more info, or watch the Olds College social media pages.
No matter the colour, size, or age, I love running farm equipment. But you'll never catch me wearing a red hoodie 💚
Here's to celebrating #CndAgDay with farms of every size, age and colour!
@SpecialtySeeds We haven't yet!? Have you used them at all, or know of someone who makes use of them? If so, I'd love to learn more about them. Information on their website is very limited.
My presentation for #AgronomyUpdate2022 is ready to go for next week! I'll be sharing info & experiences on a number of soil sensors that we are using on the @OldsCollege#SmartFarm

Here you'll see the latest poultry "biomimicry tech" on display, moving 6,000 chickens to fresh pasture autonomously using only solar power and electric motors. This coop is integrated with a crop field, where synthetic fertilizer has been totally eliminated. @elonmusk@kimbal
