Zappos was beating Amazon on cost per order. Amazon couldn't figure out how.
Turns out @Alfred_Lin's team was running Kiva robots before Amazon even believed they'd work. Amazon later bought Kiva for $775M.
Alfred went from operating automation at Zappos to funding the next wave at Sequoia. This conversation covers both lenses.

I feel like the issue most Londoners have isn’t with rain but it’s with the grayness. From what people have told me “it’s more of a ceiling than a sky.”
I’ve been to London over 15 times and I alway catch it at beautiful times and never mind the gray, but that’s maybe diff from living there. I dunno, it’s one of my favorite cities.
I feel like you could have offered a lot more nuance and perspective here, but there isn’t much. If you’re going to crap on a whole industry, one that you’ve earned the right to crap on, I would have been interested in you having taken more time to write something deeper with actual insight vs. one message repeated.!
This is the type of thinking we need in AI. Games provide controlled environments with clear objectives, Input + feedback, without the messiness of real-world.
DIAMOND shows this approach can capture intricate visual details that matter for decision-making. Really Excited to see where @PimDeWitte and @gen_intuition takes this next!
With enough data, robots and AI can learn “world models” that let them predict the results of their actions. These models are a way to learn how embodied AI agents can perform a wide variety of useful tasks — but they require a huge amount of data.
The team at General Intuition @gen_intuition has a solution: use data from video games! Games teach movement, problem solving, and complex spatial reasoning, and they come in a staggering diversity of forms, covering a wide variety of problems. What’s more, the captured data is high-quality, without the noise or annotation error that can come from
We sat down with @PimDeWitte and @AdamJelley2 from the General Intuition team to learn more about their history, their plans, and their philosophy.
