Africa spent $15.3 billion on wheat imports in 2023.
Imagine if even half of that was used to support millet farmers and local food innovation. We’d save billions, create jobs, and nourish our people with healthier, homegrown food.
Why do we call kram-kram and wild millet “famine foods”? They fed Saharan civilizations, are packed with protein, and thrive in sand and drought. It's time for us in Africa to decolonize our meals and reclain our food sovereignty.
Kenya Power Board chairperson Joy Mdivo draws mixed reactions after attributing high bills in Kenyan households to careless energy, while claiming that televisions on standby consume up to 30% of their full power, a greatly exaggerated figure that sharply contradicts technical estimates.
This sudden “Uganda vs Kenya, we deserve the ocean” language smells like old school election politics rather than grand strategy. When regimes are aging and elections are near they often reach for the oldest trick in the book. They invent or revive a border grievance. They shout about national dignity. They hope citizens forget the price of bread.
We have seen this script before across Africa and beyond. Leaders cornered by youth unemployment corruption and succession questions suddenly discover an external enemy or a historical injustice at the border. It worked for past strongmen who used it to rally the flag and silence dissent. If you question the regime you risk being branded unpatriotic.
So when you hear threats about future wars over access to the Indian Ocean you must ask yourself a simple question. Is this really about trade routes and law or is it about manufacturing a patriotic crisis to escort an old order through another election cycle. Ugandans should be very careful not to be mobilised as props in someone else’s campaign storyline.
