NOW that the budgets have been presented, the usual debates surrounding them are largely over, and the heated television talk shows have moved on to the next controversy, it is perhaps time to revisit some fundamental questions: What exactly is the role of government in economic growth? Which level of government is better placed to promote growth in Pakistan — the federal government or the provincial governments?

Pakistan's biggest fiscal myth: Pakistan's federation funds the provinces.

The reality is almost reverse: The provinces fund the federation. More than 95% of federal revenues come from activities in provinces.

The center should keep some for its constitutional functions and send the rest back to provinces after redistributing some from rich to poor ones. But in the process it eats up nearly 60% of the funds for its expenses, much of it inefficiently used.

A federation cannot remain strong by constantly demonizing and weakening its federating units.

Sometimes, I think the govt should pass law: one family one house ! any additional house/flat/plot should be taken over and given to a homeless family --
I am not a socialist though.

The mindset of our people is such that they want multiple houses for themselves, one in city, one in village, and one also in Murree. On top of that they also want to leave behind properties separately fir kids/ next generations
