Speed just did an internet stream from underwater. The tech is genuinely wild, because water blocks every wireless signal we have.

Your phone disconnects in 4 inches of water. WiFi and cellular both run in the gigahertz range, and seawater absorbs those frequencies as heat. Same physics as your microwave oven, which operates at 2.45 GHz. By 4 inches deep, signal strength has dropped more than 99%.

This is why scuba divers have used hand signals for 80 years. It's why submarines have to surface to call home.

The Navy's workaround is VLF radio at 3 to 30 kHz. It penetrates about 30 meters of seawater and carries hundreds of bits per second. Roughly the speed of a 1980s pager. The ELF system that reaches deeper required a 2,000-acre transmitter site, 26 antenna towers up to 1,000 feet tall, and megawatts of power, all to send what amounts to text messages.

Speed was streaming HD video. Millions of bits per second. No wireless technology on the entire electromagnetic spectrum carries that through saltwater. None.

The trick is a hardwire tether. Underwater, the data travels through a physical cable from his rig up to a floating surface unit. The moment that cable breaks the surface, the relay hits Starlink or cellular and the stream goes out wireless from there.

Using a commercial Unitree robot dog for teaching is fine. Calling it “developed by us” at a national AI summit is not. This is exactly how trust in Indian innovation gets damaged.

When you showcase something under the banner of Indian innovation, accountability matters. If claims don’t match reality, action should follow.

Good decision by the government to make them vacate the AI Summit stall. We can’t talk about Atmanirbhar Bharat and then misrepresent imported tech. Standards have to be higher.
