It’s the bread and butter of public relations. Your business has something to announce. It could be a new product. A service enhancement. A geographic expansion. Or an important, new hire.
The day has finally arrived. You’ve decided to put out a press release. It’s written. Double-checked. Distributed on one of the newswires. And … nothing. Onto the next project.
It doesn’t have to be this way.
In today’s world, we have access to more powerful tools for telling our business stories and reaching our audiences than ever before. Yet, many continue to approach public announcements as they were done 20 or 30 years ago. Any company of any size can step out of this rut and create engaging, effective announcements.
Here are five ways to put your news out so it lands with maximum impact:
✅ Write for your audience. Too often, news announcements are conceived with a strictly internal focus.
✅ Tell a compelling story. Even the rigid format of a press release allows us to create an interesting narrative.
✅ Target the right reporters. Once the announcement goes out, we need to pitch the news. But we need to be honest. Who's likely to cover it?
✅ Don’t forget your visuals. Images and graphics can be included with a news release, but they also allow us to present the story nicely ourselves.
✅ Create bespoke social content. Our potential audience on social is orders of magnitude larger than traditional media.

My favorite tip... Focus on using powerful verbs and replace the verb "to be" at every instance. 👇

Agreed. I ran my first company for 10 years, kept it fairly small and eventually merged it. Starting up No. 2 now.
I believe at issue is whether you are building for yourself or someone else — an outside investor. That’s where this idea comes from. If you are building for others, scale becomes the game. For those who want to own and run out own companies, scale should be developed as appropriate.
No, it’s not a typo. The term “lede” refers to the opening shot of a news story, the words and ideas that either capture the reader’s interest or lose him or her forever. 👇
The first step to creating an effective lede is recognizing we need to create an effective lede. Then, we can spend time with it. Craft it. Come back to it. Edit it. Tighten it up. 👇
