On December 13, an ISIS-linked ambush by a lone gunman killed three Americans. Currently, Syria can’t police its own desert, neighbors won’t commit, and the geography guarantees chaos. Without a clear long-term strategic rationale, the small U.S. special forces presence can only do so much to keep ISIS in check.
