One of the most successful development stories in the world is African.
3 generations ago Mauritius was seen as a likely failure, a Nobel prize view that would have been shared by many in the country. But they already had one of the more literate populations and from that ….
When we published @fastestbillion in 2012, the % of SSA low-income countries at high risk of debt distress had been shrinking since 2008 (and even fewer by 2014). Today 60.5% are at high risk and none are at low risk. @TTTEconomist aims to explain why
@nickleke@afalli@andrewfootie One of my favourite graphs from @TTTEconomist shows GDP growth per capita vs the ratio of adults to kids. Nigeria is around 1.0. Asia is booming as ratio is around 2.5. Old rich countries are heading back to 1.0 but not there yet, so we need to watch Korea, Greece, Japan etc
Ghana's default was a predictable scenario in 2021 whilst writing The Time Travelling Economist (albeit one we hoped could be avoided). We will see others default too because default is a fertility issue
Chapter 4 - A debt crisis is probably unavoidable in a bid to create jobs
Friend just pinged me. Needs to visit California from Nairobi for meeting with investor next month. Next visa appointment: June 2024.
The US visa system is literally broken @SecBlinken@VisaLimbo 👇🏽
Very good news: The World Health Organization has just approved the first ever vaccine to prevent malaria.
It would be even better if the efficacy was higher and longer lasting, but this is a big step forward in preventing the deaths of children.

World Bank upgrades 3 African countries from ‘low income’ status to ‘lower middle income’ status. #Senegal & #Comoros makes sense but #Zimbabwe is a surprise. Matters for how confessional loans are. https://t.co/J0Tw5DRJkj
#Nigeria paid back a #Eurobond yesterday. You don’t get ‘good debt management’ headlines like that (as you didn’t for Ghana and Gabon repaying in 2017). It was $500mn issued in 2013. (The post-debt-relief debut issue from 2011 matures in 2021).

This is a far cry from the 1980s when Nigeria went from bad to worse as the oil price crashed. Something fundamental has changed for the better ..and not just the oil price https://t.co/CgFXHyQyWL
The great clean up has just begun;Eskom's corrupt &incompetent directors/execs are booted first. Next will be other SOEs &then the long process of reclaiming the looted money&jailing the crooks will need to follow. The economy will then resume its growth path slowly.Let's hope so.
Angolan president has sacked the heads of intelligence service (Ze Maria) and police (Ambrosio Lemos). The two men had been re-assigned for another 5-year mandate by former president Dos Santos just before he left office. It seems the Dos Santos empire is falling apart.
I am so emotional. I never thought I would see this day. Mugabe has resigned in my lifetime. This is a stepping stone towards the Zimbabwe we want. It won't be easy. #Zimbabwe
