The Golden Records are two phonograph records that were launched into space by NASA in 1977, as part of the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecrafts. They are designed to communicate a message of life and culture on Earth to any intelligent extraterrestrial beings that might encounter them in the future. The records contain sounds and images that represent the diversity and beauty of our planet and its inhabitants.
The records were designed by a team of scientists, artists, and experts, led by the famous astronomer Carl Sagan. Sagan was a pioneer in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, and he wanted to create a record that would reflect the best of humanity and inspire curiosity and wonder in the alien listeners. He also wanted to make a statement of peace and goodwill, and to express the hope that we are not alone in the universe.
The records include 115 images of various aspects of life on Earth, such as landscapes, animals, plants, people, activities, and artifacts. They also include natural sounds, such as the wind, the ocean, the rain, and the birds. They also include musical selections from different cultures and eras, ranging from classical to folk to rock. They also include spoken greetings in 55 languages, and printed messages from the President of the United States and the Secretary-General of the United Nations.
The records are made of gold-plated copper, and are encased in protective aluminum covers. They also have instructions, in symbolic language, on how to play the records and decode the information. The records are expected to last for billions of years, and to travel far beyond the boundaries of our solar system.
