The outrage over X briefly revealing account locations says more about the accounts than the feature. If your digital army falls apart because users can see that half the most active “grassroots patriots” are posting from St. Petersburg, Lagos, or Islamabad, that is not censorship. It is sunlight. And sunlight is exactly what foreign influence operations hate. This is not new. The United States has spent a decade documenting Russian, Pakistani, and Nigerian bot farms pushing pro Trump narratives, dividing American voters, and amplifying anti Ukraine messaging.

The irony is that transparency is the easiest fix. Honest users have nothing to fear from the truth. Coordinated disinformation networks do. That is why the feature vanished as quickly as it appeared. When a movement depends on hiding the origins of its loudest voices, it is no longer a political coalition. It is an operation.
