In an increasingly interconnected academic ecosystem, cross disciplinary collaboration is no longer optional but mission critical. This month, I had the opportunity to conceptualise and deliver two International Conferences on Sustainability and Indian Knowledge Systems at @jamia_hamdard, bringing together diverse institutional perspectives and global academic voices. The conferences received extensive coverage across national media platforms, including @PTI_News and other leading publications.

Each conference was designed as a collaborative platform, bringing together three universities to foster interdisciplinary dialogue and meaningful academic exchange.

The response has been deeply encouraging, with both events receiving strong appreciation for their scope, participation, and intellectual engagement.

Such initiatives reaffirm the importance of collaborative academic spaces in addressing contemporary global challenges through diverse knowledge frameworks.

A recent news article has highlighted my lecture at the Central University of Kashmir, where I argued that media education is facing a structural crisis.

This is not about updating syllabi. It is about rethinking the discipline itself🧵

The article captures what I describe as the algorithmic condition:
1️⃣ Communication is no longer governed by editors
2️⃣ Visibility is shaped by algorithms
3️⃣ Public discourse is platform mediated

Yet, we continue to teach students content creation, not systems of visibility. This creates a fundamental disconnect.

My key argument:
👉 Media education is producing skilled creators who are not equipped to understand how communication actually functions today.

The lecture, as reported, was not a routine academic engagement, it was a call to confront this misalignment.
If communication is now infrastructural, teaching it as craft alone is no longer sufficient.

In today’s hyperconnected world, loneliness is quietly emerging as one of the most pressing public health challenges. The World Health Organization has warned that social isolation is linked to higher risks of depression, anxiety, cardiovascular disease, and even premature mortality. Global research equates the health impact of chronic loneliness to smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day. In India too, rapid urbanisation, nuclear family structures, and digitally mediated lives are reshaping how people connect and increasingly, how they drift apart. The urgency to address emotional wellbeing and meaningful human connection has never been greater.

In my column in the Navbharat Times, I highlighted:

📱 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐨𝐱: Even as people remain constantly online and reachable, emotional understanding and genuine support are declining, creating a silent disconnect.
🎭 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠: Much of social media engagement is performative, offering visibility without true emotional depth and often intensifying feelings of isolation.
⚠️ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐬: Loneliness rarely announces itself loudly; it surfaces through subtle behavioural and emotional cues that families and peers frequently overlook.
🤝 𝐑𝐞𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Meaningful relationships today require intentional investment, time, presence, trust, and conscious effort within families and communities.
🧠 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐲 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥: Active listening and empathy are not optional soft skills but essential social capacities that must be deliberately practised and culturally strengthened.
🌍 𝐀 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: Loneliness is not merely an individual struggle, it is a societal wellbeing issue that demands community awareness, institutional attention, and policy focus.

The core message is clear: loneliness is not a private weakness, it is a collective wake up call. Building emotionally resilient individuals and healthier communities will require a conscious return to cultures of care, conversation, and genuine human connection. The time to act is now.

In a time of rapid technological change and accelerated information flows, media must pause, reflect, and recalibrate. As innovation races ahead of ethics, the need for informed, responsible dialogue has never been greater.

I created Media Matters as a national platform to examine how media shapes democracy, culture, creativity, and public consciousness, bringing together law, ethics, and industry practice in one critical conversation.

This edition was enriched by the presence of Vikrant Rana, eminent IPR expert and Managing Partner at S.S. Rana & Co. Most days, teaching is quiet, incremental work. And then, once in a while, a moment arrives that gently confirms why it all matters.

Nearly fourteen years after his time at AJK MCRC, one of my students, Mohd Maktoob Ahmad Saad, remembered me on a day that marked a major milestone in his journey. Not simply to share the achievement, but to acknowledge the people and classrooms that, in his words, “extended my horizons.” That gesture meant more to me than any number ever could. Today, his work reflects thoughtful, modern storytelling, clear in intent, creative in form, and purposeful in impact.

Seeing a student grow to this scale, carrying forward clarity, conviction, and a strong storytelling voice, brings a quiet, lasting pride. Instances like these remind us that while skills evolve and platforms change, the values we pass on endure.

These are the moments that stay with you long after the lectures end and remind you that while skills may change, what we pass on as educators truly endures. A proud moment as a teacher.

Contrary to popular belief, Gen-Z has not stepped away from social media they have simply shifted their digital spaces. The era of loud public posting is giving way to private communities, closed groups and interest-driven platforms where authenticity matters more than visibility.

Contributed to @NavbharatTimes – Sunday, the article explores how Gen-Z is redefining online presence by choosing where and how to engage rather than how often to post. From private chats and niche platforms to selective sharing, today’s youth is prioritising control, privacy and meaningful interaction over public validation.

In an era where our personal and professional lives are deeply intertwined with digital ecosystems, safeguarding our online footprint has become an operational imperative for every user. With India witnessing a significant surge in cyber incidents, identity theft attempts and digital fraud, the conversation around protection, awareness and resilience has moved from optional to indispensable.

It was in this context that I had the privilege of contributing to a featured expert panel in @NavbharatTimes , along with @karnikaseth , Cyber Law Expert and Advocate, Supreme Court of India, and Mr. Ankit Gupta, Head, Retail Cyber Insurance, Policybazaar for Business. Together, we decoded the evolving threat landscape and articulated actionable pathways for individuals and families to strengthen their cyber readiness in a rapidly shifting environment.

Some of the strategic themes highlighted in the article included:

✅ Cyber insurance functioning as a core risk mitigation framework supporting financial recovery, legal assistance and data restoration

✅ Rising identity theft, phishing attempts and social engineering making continuous monitoring and rapid response essential

As digital participation becomes universal, exposure surfaces are widening and user vulnerabilities are multiplying. Adopting structured safeguards, building awareness and elevating our cyber readiness are critical to sustaining trust in the connected world.

Encouraging professionals, parents and young users to invest in protective practices, strengthen their digital hygiene and stay proactive in mitigating emerging risks.

What users should do:

🔒 Review privacy settings before engaging with any AI platform to minimise inadvertent data exposure. Use enterprise approved tools for any work related inputs to ensure compliance and data governance.
💡 Avoid sharing financial identifiers, authentication details, confidential documents, or personal emotional history with AI systems.
📊 Build a discipline of sanitising prompts by removing sensitive markers, internal numbers, or identifiable information.
📘 Stay updated on evolving AI safety guidelines to navigate risks with informed intent.

This behavioural shift calls for a coordinated response mindset that strengthens user awareness, platform responsibility, and policy readiness. As AI becomes an always-on layer in our digital lives, proactive data discipline will be essential to ensure that innovation delivers empowered experiences without creating unintended vulnerabilities for individuals, enterprises, or the ecosystem at large.

• 📈 Alcohol is a top preventable health risk for Indians under 30, causing losses in potential and performance.
• ⚠️ Even occasional consumption links to higher cancer, cardiovascular, and cognitive risks.
• 🏙️ Urban shifts and peer influence normalize early exposure among young professionals.
• 🌱 Shift youth mindset toward sober socializing and wellness-based lifestyles.

Alcoholics Anonymous’s recovery model shows structured community support can scale impact across sociocultural contexts. With 1,500+ groups in India, AA drives resilience through empathy, accountability, and peer transformation.

This initiative integrates holistic wellness into youth leadership development. Students’ clarity and commitment signal India’s rising responsible decision makers.

Momentum builds via partnerships advancing proactive wellbeing across campuses, communities, and institutions. Future efforts will strengthen India’s leadership capital through informed wellness.
