We will reiterate that we believe FIFA's practice of putting the hosts automatically to Pot 1 should be re-evaluated.

It creates huge imbalances both in the group stage, and consequently the KO bracket.

Had the group stage been seeded strictly according to FIFA ranking (Dec 2025), 🇭🇷🇲🇦🇨🇴 would all have been Pot 1 instead of Pot 2.

It would've been impossible for 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Scotland to face two Top 10 teams in the group stage (🇧🇷🇲🇦).

🇲🇦 Morocco and 🇭🇷 Croatia would not have been able to face 🇧🇷 & 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 in their group and would have had a much higher chance of winning it. This would then have likely prevented them needing to face a Pot 1 side already in R32 (🇳🇱 & 🇵🇹/🇨🇴).

🇲🇦 won nonetheless, but it could've easily been otherwise. 🇭🇷 was not of that fortune.

🇨🇴 Colombia needed to finish ahead of a Top 5 team (🇵🇹) to prevent them having a KO path where they have to face two "Pot 1" teams already in R32 and R16 (🇭🇷🇪🇸).

🇵🇹 Portugal ended up there instead, but it would've been less likely had 🇨🇴 been placed in Pot 1 where they belong.

Of course, anything is possible, and there are no guarantees that in a different group setting the KO bracket would not have turned out imbalanced either way.

But that's not the point. It's about doing whatever you can to create as balanced of a playing field as possible given the set of information you have at a given point in time. If it then still ends up imbalanced - so be it.
