That’s an result of the Mercator projection. It’s well known, that it distorts massively. Countries closer to the pole seem much bigger than in reality.
There are different possible ways to show a sphere on a plane, none of which are without problems.
The Mercator projection has a feature that is useful for compass navigation, though: when you move on a straight line on it, you keep a constant compass reading. In reality you move on a slight curve, but that was no big problem for ships of the time. In the age of sea travel it became widespread for that reason and stuck around because of cultural inertia.
ai is a replacement for God is such a strange outlook on life
dude.. you are telling me that God is just the least error gradient of the average reddit response?
@MarcCornella@theo You're right! How can no-one notice?

@petergyang I’m an experienced software engineer, and I think that’s true. You get amazingly far, but are then are being dropped into a disaster zone. Fixing the stuff that a looks plausible but is broken, and doing it as a beginner must be taunting.
@DylanoA4@Jeremyakee I started reading The Brothers Karamasov two days ago. It's a bit intimidating at 1000 pages, but it grabbed me after two pages, like few books do, because the characters are so real.
Tomorrow brings round two of #FreeSpeechOnTrial as longstanding member of the Finnish Parliament,
@PaiviRasanen, and Bishop Pohjola face criminal prosecution for "hate speech" i.e heresy against the secular orthodoxies of our day. Here's 10 things you might not know ... #thread🧵
@hosseeb@OneKeyHQ You don't know Ledger is fine, you assume it. They would at least have to open source their software.
This all isn't in the best interest of the security of it's users, at best it's a compromise trading freedom for more convenience.
@_AustinHerbert Do you believe that European rapeseed oil, cold pressed, marketed as organic, is as unhealthy? Your description makes it sound like the processing was the main problem
PSA: @SocketSecurity is hiring a Staff Security Researcher!
Since the launch of Socket AI (ChatGPT-Powered Threat Analysis) we’ve found hundreds of malware and vulnerabilities every day in npm and PyPI. We are looking for someone to do research on these malware and publish the findings to protect the community.
The data we’re sitting on at Socket is super unique and this is a very special opportunity to be one of the first to use it for research purposes.
DM me if interested!

Depositors must take responsibility for understanding the Federal Reserve Bank...
...yet the Fed is understood to take no responsibility for bankrupting depositors?
There was indeed a broken promise.
And we can prove it.
Every quarter, the Fed publishes rate forecasts.
What did they forecast back in Dec 2020?
Well, their median estimate for 2023's rate was 0.1%.
But today, it's actually 4.75%.
Off by >47X!!
So any bank who bought long-term bonds on that Dec 2020 guidance got destroyed.

A very dark experiment is under way in Nigeria, with deadly consequences. Since October 2021, 99.5% of Nigerians have refused to use the central bank's digital currency, the so-called e-Naira, preferring to continue using cash. So what did the central bank do? It doubled down.
@paulg Hardly any new software product that doesn't claim to be AI. Even the note-taking app I recently bought was "AI," because it has a search function.
it's not aliens
i wish it were aliens
but it's not aliens
it's just the ol' engineered panic, an attractive nuisance ensuring natsec reporters get assigned to investigate balloon bullshit rather than budgets or bombings (à la nordstream)
until next time
