🇱🇻 Riga moves to block Russian grain transit to Europe

It looks like Moscow’s previous provocations and threats have seriously angered Latvia.

The country is planning to impose a 300% tariff on grain from Russia and Belarus, Reuters reports. For Moscow, that would be especially painful now, with exports through the Black Sea and Sea of Azov severely disrupted and Baltic ports still serving as one of the fallback routes.

Around one million tons were transshipped through Latvia last year, but experts estimate that this year the volume could have increased by as much as tenfold.

And that’s not all. Starting next year, Latvia also wants to completely halt regular bus services to Russia and Belarus, including transit routes.

At the moment, effectively only one route remains — Riga to Moscow, operated by Ecolines. Its permit is valid until January 9, 2027, and the authorities do not plan to renew it.

Poland and Sweden have something most Europeans probably don’t know exists:
online mushroom maps.
Every autumn, mushroom picking becomes serious enough in both countries that people can check digital maps showing where mushrooms are appearing, where conditions are improving and where it may be worth going into the forest.
In Poland, GrzyboRadar tracks conditions across the country and updates its map several times a day.
Sweden has similar digital tools and local reporting around mushroom season.
It says something interesting about northern and eastern Europe.
In much of the continent, a forest is mainly somewhere to hike.
In Poland and Sweden, for a few weeks every autumn, it also becomes something closer to a public food map.
