@PlayWarframe If I was an engineer at DE I'd be pissed that @rebbford tried to to get cross save released like this two days before Christmas.
If it's not ready it's not ready and telling the whole community to all do the merge in a tiny window basically guarantees it will be overloaded.
I had "Test alerts" disabled but the government ignored that preference for the second time in 3 months.
Now I've disabled all emergency alerts completely. Well done, folks.
Maybe read up on "alert fatigue" before blasting my room at full volume for no fucking reason
Also let’s just take a minute to acknowledge that the “crazy tech stack” developed by Twitter was reused by SoundCloud, Tumblr, Pinterest, Foursquare, Apple, Etsy, Nest, PagerDuty, Strava, Tinder, and many other top internet companies
The longer I stay away from Twitter the weirder it seems when I take look after a while.
It's like "What on earth happened here? What is everyone on about!?"
There's a lot of weird debate about whether Rust in the kernel is useful or not... in my experience, it's way more useful than I could've ever imagined!
I went from 1st render to a stable desktop that can run run games, browsers, etc. in about two days of work on my driver (!!!)
@rickasaurus If you are used to BSD, it should be fine. I recommend iTerm2 as a terminal and something like homebrew and/or https://t.co/0bLxADpbcI to install stuff you need.
@reibitto It's one of those things, which I strongly recommend against.
If you do this in application code and someone moves one part of it somewhere else (or copy-pastes it), then suddenly the behavior can change without a compile-error.
There are ok use-cases but usually in libs.
Fun fact: did you know that after every hour of work at amazon the computer taunts you with a 30 second break where you say mantras that help you come to peace with your own exploitation?
if you regularly use something, like a pair of scissors, in two different areas for different tasks, get two copies of the same pair of scissors.
for some reason i thought i had to have just one of everything. those kind of beliefs are hard to spot and life-changing to break
@thingskatedid I read a blog post about this years ago. They called this problem "artificial scarcity". I've been thinking about it ever since and actively try to counter it.
You cannot forget your charger if you already have one everywhere you need it. And consequently you need to think less.
@QuinnyPig Sure, but it's harder to notice and prove bias when it's a more complex input than male/female. Also it might be sold as a (blackbox) tool/service to other companies.
I think this is a very likely scenario.
Let's say they train a "recruitment screening AI" with that data and the algo has bias against people based on prior illnesses. Even if they get caught they will just use the old "the algo decided against candidates and it's not our fault"
I believe that the overwhelming majority of Amazonians are excellent humans with high integrity.
I also believe that mistakes happen, and that Machine Learning® is excellent at occluding inappropriate uses of data.
