Frequent lamenting about how bad things are (in politics or relationships or other culture gripes) is mostly a way for people to avoid responsibility for what they can change. If you constantly repeat that everything is bad, it lets your ego off the hook for doing nothing.
When I reason about what is just and who deserves, I find that the logic doesn't and can't really check out. Love and grace actually matters most. The best things in life were given to me, undeservedly so. 25 years of being fed and clothed by others. Thinking about this today.

the last person i saw with enchanted eyes was a venezuelan immigrant entrepreneur guy. we were talking abt some mistreatment in the world, i'd never seen someone look so genuinely concerned. he was glowing with uncanny empathy. it wasn't of this world
he was exercising what simone weil called 'creative attention'. attention that creates humanity where there is none. he saw, so completely, the suffering of souls that were nameless but not anonymous to him
attention akin to a baptism - a birth. the same attention the good samaritan gave to the afflicted man left dying by the roadside. he knew what it meant to "love thy neighbour", to know the ppl of this world with intuitive intimacy, as brothers and sisters
heartbreaking to consider there are people out there who wouldn't instantly know exactly what spot this was filmed in based on the first frame of video
