People can criticize MBS. They can criticize Vision 2030, the cost of the giga-projects, execution, or individual decisions.
Fair enough.
But I think some criticism misses the scale of what Saudi Arabia is attempting.
I’m from Norway. 🇳🇴 Norway has the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund, the Government Pension Fund Global. Roughly 2.5 bigger than Saudi's PIF!
I’d actually like to see Norway use more of its enormous financial strength for strategic investments at home, particularly in future industries and infrastructure.
Saudi Arabia is doing exactly that, but with a much higher tolerance for risk.
Look at NEOM’s green hydrogen project.
This isn’t just another solar farm.
It is an attempt to build a world-scale renewable hydrogen supply chain, combining around 4 GW of solar and wind capacity with electrolysis, green ammonia production and export infrastructure.
The target is up to 600 tonnes of hydrogen a day, converted into green ammonia for international markets.
That is an enormous industrial experiment!
And when you try to industrialize technology at a scale that has never been built before, reality intervenes.
Timelines slip.
Costs change.
Engineering problems appear.
Markets move.
Assumptions prove wrong.
Saudi Arabia has already recalibrated parts of its giga-project strategy. Some timelines have moved, some projects have been redesigned, and greater emphasis has gone toward infrastructure and economically productive assets.
I don't automatically call that failure.
It is what happens when you try to turn an ambitious blueprint into concrete, steel, power plants, ports and functioning industries.
There is a legitimate debate about whether Saudi Arabia has sometimes moved too fast or taken risks that were too large.
But if you're trying to transform an oil-dependent economy, risk is unavoidable.
Some bets will fail.
Some will take longer.
Some will be abandoned.
Others may look very different in 20 years from what they look like today.
The same nuance is needed on Yemen.
The claim that the Saudi-led intervention was simply an unmitigated strategic failure is too simplistic.
Look at Hodeidah in 2018.
Saudi-backed Yemeni forces and the coalition had made significant advances around the port and were putting pressure on the Houthis' supply routes.
Then Western diplomatic pressure intensified dramatically.
The coalition halted the offensive as international efforts pushed for a ceasefire and negotiations, culminating in the Stockholm Agreement.
That doesn't prove Saudi Arabia would have won the war if the offensive had continued.
It doesn't prove Hodeidah would have ended the conflict.
But it does show why the history is more complicated than "Saudi Arabia intervened, failed and learned nothing."
Today, Riyadh is pursuing a different approach: strengthening the Yemeni government, trying to consolidate the anti-Houthi camp and securing Saudi Arabia's southern border.
The outcome is not predetermined.
But neither is the strategy static.
That is why I think patience matters when judging Saudi Arabia under MBS.
Transforming an oil-dependent economy, building new industries and reshaping the country's security architecture in less than two decades is an extraordinary undertaking.
There will be failures.
There will be delays.
There will be projects that never become what was originally promised.
The real question is what Saudi Arabia looks like in 2035, 2040 and 2050.
History is usually much less interested in whether every rendering was delivered on schedule than in what actually got built.
