🇪🇺 It's unfortunate to say, but these people seem to live in a world of their own, completely detached from reality. Europe started as a dream and has gradually turned into a kingdom of bureaucracy, populated by bureaucrats trapped inside a self referential bubble. It is astonishing that they want to celebrate €10 billion, which is peanuts compared to the US, while remaining obsessed with the idea that the state should be responsible for everything. Perhaps someone should remind them that they themselves are a significant part of the problem, and that any serious solution must also involve reforming and downsizing both European institutions and national and local bureaucracies.

Obsessed with ‘decolonizing knowledge,’ activist scholars have been burying truths essential to understanding history. Colonial powers transplanted transformative technologies and institutions that have lifted billions.

12 years ago Luigi @zingales and I wrote the first draft of our paper “Diagnosing the Italian Disease”, which linked the stalling of Italian productivity to its firms’ failure to effectively use ICT.
Unfortunately, it seems it remains very much relevant today in the age of AI 🙁

Tutti parlano del deficit italiano al 3,1% (e la mancata uscita dalla procedura).
Io parlerei che la nostra spesa pubblica ha sfondato i 1100 miliardi di euro l'anno e vale oltre il 51% dell'economia.
Now the market shows a 1% probability, but for a considerable period the odds of "Bitcoin replacing SHA-256 due to quantum computing" fluctuated between 4–7% on Polymarket.
Not huge probabilities, but still free money if you understood the tech

The incredible evolution of Italy’s prime-age population. Have you ever heard it discussed? The peak was in 2009. The effects of the subsequent collapse (despite positive net migration) are often confused with Euro entry or the GFC. In just 15 years, we’re back to 1960 levels. How could the Italian economy have grown?
The private sector does not see a lot of positive NPV investment opportunities in the EU, especially when it comes to innovation, but Brussels sees lots of positive NPV investment opportunities for the government.
Europeans should ask themselves whether they really think they're falling behind the US because the US government is better at industrial policy.
Sta facendo molto discutere una massima recente in tema di #dirittotributario da parte della Corte di Cassazione.

If you have high debt, fiscal stimulus can make sense if it boosts medium-term growth. But that's not the story for Italy. There was a massive fiscal stimulus and - now that the sugar rush is over - growth is back to zero. What's left is just more debt and still no growth...
