Cuatro jóvenes observadoras de combate del cuartel de la Brigada Sur, en Re’im, quedaron atrapadas el 7/10 mientras Hamás invadía la base.

Sin armas. Sin saber quién entraba. Viendo en las pantallas secuestros, cadáveres y terroristas atravesando la frontera.

“Si tenemos que morir, morimos juntas. No seremos secuestradas vivas”.

Decidieron que se clavarían lapiceras en el cuello antes que caer en manos de los terroristas.

Mientras intentaban salvar vidas desde el centro de mando, también escuchaban árabe y golpes en la puerta, sin saber si quien estaba afuera era un soldado o un terrorista.

El comandante de la brigada, coronel Asaf Hamami, salió a combatir y cayó. Su hijo de seis años estaba dentro de la base. Las jóvenes lo cuidaron y hasta le dieron los chicles que llevaban escondidos en sus uniformes.

Una de ellas recuerda: “Incluso nosotras, que éramos ‘el Ejército’, estábamos debajo de una mesa esperando que el Ejército viniera a salvarnos”.

Después del 7/10 siguieron sirviendo en el mismo lugar, frente a las mismas pantallas y sentadas en las mismas sillas.

Años después, cuentan por primera vez las secuelas: pesadillas, ataques de ansiedad, miedo constante a ser secuestradas y culpa por haber sobrevivido.

Tenían 18, 19, 20 y 22 años.

No eran soldados de una unidad de élite. Eran cuatro jóvenes que, en el momento más terrible, tuvieron que gestionar una guerra desde una habitación mientras el enemigo estaba literalmente detrás de la puerta.

Ellas también fueron el 7 de Octubre. Sobrevivieron. Y también merecen ser recordadas.

Then a schoolteacher walks into the ocean for a stranger and answers the question without saying a word.

In August 2015, at age 17, Yusra and her older sister Sara fled the Syrian civil war.

They reached Turkey and boarded an overcrowded inflatable dinghy (designed for 6-7 people but carrying about 20 refugees) heading across the Aegean Sea to the Greek island of Lesbos.

About 20-30 minutes into the crossing, the engine failed, and the boat began taking on water and sinking. Most passengers couldn't swim. Yusra, Sara (also a swimmer), and two other capable swimmers jumped into the sea. They grabbed ropes or the sides and swam/pushed/pullled the boat for over three hours (accounts vary slightly from 3 to 3.5 hours) until they reached safety on Lesbos. This effort kept the boat afloat and prevented it from capsizing, saving everyone on board, including themselves.

Yusra later made her way to Germany, resumed training, and was selected for the first-ever Refugee Olympic Team (under the Olympic flag). She competed in swimming at the 2016 Rio Olympics (women's 100m butterfly and freestyle events) and again with the Refugee Olympic Team at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
