The equals sign "=" was first introduced by Welsh mathematician Robert Recorde in 1557 in his book "The Whetstone of Witte."

Recorde wrote that he created the symbol to avoid the tedious repetition of the words "is equal to." He chose two parallel lines of equal length to represent the concept of equality.
