Lots of scarce birds in Kent this week. Best were an Iberian Chiffchaff and a fly-by Gull-billed Tern. But there was plenty more with Hoopoe, Black-winged Stilt, Red-footed Falcon, Glossy Ibis and Temminck’s Stint all recorded. All details on https://t.co/r0yVRL8UN9 #kentbirding
Another Bluethroat was found, a Common Crane lingered, sea-watching improved a little bit and a few more Summer migrants arrived in Kent. For full details see https://t.co/r0yVRL8UN9. #kentbirding
KOS Site of the month – March
Northward Hill RSPB - March is the time to visit this North Kent gem! The UK’s largest heronry is bursting into life, with Grey Herons and Little Egrets busy nesting. Keep an eye on the marshes for Marsh Harriers and wintering wildfowl! #kentbirding
KOS species of the month – March
March can see Northern Wheatears arrive in Kent. This smart looking species does breed in Kent but many more pass through to breed more northerly, including the Greenland sub species on their way to Greenland and north-west Canada. #kentbirding
For those tired of winter and ☔️ weather, there is growing evidence into following week of more consistent high pressure influence from Azores High.
There also looks to be an attempt next weekend in the south. I think this all points to eventual very mild conditions in final week of Feb, say mid teens. A burst of spring,
The Red-flanked Bluetail and Pallas’s Warbler remained into this week, while a Black Guillemot flew past Dungeness and a Glaucous Gull offered close-up views in Margate. Full details on https://t.co/r0yVRL8UN9. #kentbirding#birdguides
The earlier UKMO looks increasingly isolated and without support. See its output on left and compare with latest GEFS mean on Sunday with separation of troughing. The first phase a cleaner and colder east feed to end this week is locking into place.
I left the Obs this morning with a short walk in mind and ended with my best encounter with a Hen Harrier! First saw it offshore, coming in-off overhead and inland. It settled in the asparagus fields, hawking so low it wasn't viewable until it popped out just a few metres away
Fantastic morning up the cliffs. Picked up a Pallid swift first thing over eastern docks Dover harbour for 5-10 mins before moving NE then a point blank Pallas’s warbler in Langdon hole . Edited pics on the blog later https://t.co/iWTH3YfOXD
A day that will live long in the memory… elation when this little beauty popped up in front of me… a 1stW male Desert Wheatear !!! At South Swale NNR on the seawall between the Sportsman Pub and Castle Coote (Seasalter). @RareBirdAlertUK@BirdGuides@KentishPlover
