The Veiled Carmelites

Before the Second Vatican Council, on certain occasions the Carmelites wore veils that covered their faces. These veils were used whenever a sister had to appear in public - for example, at a Mass or a procession - or when she had to leave the enclosure.

The purpose was to allow the nun to preserve her contemplative spirit, even if only temporarily in the midst of the world. This veil was worn by Saint Teresa and her first Carmelites.

The rules for visits at the Carmel were quite strict. The only exception was for novices, who could receive visitors - in the parlor behind the grilles - whoever they wished.

Saint Teresa wanted it to be clear that the sisters were there because they wanted to be, and not because they were forced by anyone.
