Arif Hasan reflects on what he has learned about international finance agencies over 50 years. He notes how they have become so detached from the needs of low incomes groups.
They work in air-conditioned offices in a city centre, far away from the homes of low-on income groups, with a fleet of expensive cars, constant trips abroad, workshops in five-star hotels and huge salaries. It is not uncommon to hear people say “they are becoming rich on our problems”
If things don’t change streets will flood more often, additional katchi abadis (informal settlements) will be created, transport will not improve because it will not be maintained and managed, traffic will become more unbearable in the absence of management and, worst of all, women’s development will take place in an environment full of conflicts because the state will not support it

Question: If PPP stands firmly for justice, fundamental rights, women's empowerment & the right to peaceful protest, why did it's provincial government's police arrest a 73 year old coming for a press conference to a press club to begin with?
Yes! Grateful to Chairman @BBhuttoZardari for his timely intervention, ensuring the immediate release of all activists. PPP has always stood firmly for justice, fundamental rights, women’s empowerment &the right to peaceful protest. Our commitment to democratic values remains firm.

1st they came for the katchi abadis...& we celebrated. If u were okay with violations of due process in their case, sit down. While it could be someone's ambition to have a 2nd/3rd home in a luxurious high rise, as @MirzaAngbeen drafted in our rushed 2018 PIL on right to shelter:
Residents of the recently (illegally) evicted katchi abadis in Islamabad had been around long before anyone had even dreamt of One Const. They had CNICs, formal electricity and gas connections. All arguments you're making on One Const right now apply to them, and then some.

Less than 20% of the population had access to transit in 2015; now 90% do. Jakarta has one of the most used bus rapid transit networks in the world.
How did they do it? Nithin Coca explains in @indevmag: https://t.co/2uSpgwZDDK
People who are crying horse about the illegality of informal housing settlements will themselves be pushed out of the capital. It might be starting with the working class but the middle class folks who are right now acting as the custodians of law have to look at their own status in the city. You cannot build a house because of the land prices, there is no housing scheme for any of you where you can own a house without spending your and your entire family’s lives earnings.
Focus this energy on demanding affordable housing for ALL. It is our right and a duty of the state to provide conditions for dignified living which includes housing, public transport, healthcare and education. Housing is increasingly becoming out of reach even for people in the upper middle classes let along working class and lower and middle classes. Don’t be your own enemies. #StopIslamabadEvictions #HousingForAll #LowcostHousingIslamabad
The Abraham Global Peace Initiative (AGPI) condemns the actions of Pedro Sánchez, who has crossed every diplomatic line by withdrawing Spain’s ambassador from Israel while reopening its embassy in Tehran. His call on the European Union to suspend its Association Agreement with Israel further underscores a deeply troubling and one-sided agenda. Such moves reflect a profound moral inversion at a time requiring clarity and leadership. His harsh anti-Israel rhetoric says far more about his political posture than it does about Israel. AGPI urges Spain to reconsider this dangerous course.
UN Security Council has started negotiations on a draft resolution circulated by Bahrain seeking authorisation for all means necessary (including the use of force) to protect passage in the Strait of Hormuz
The draft refers to Chapter VII of the U.N. Charter and seeks authorisation for Member States to act nationally or through voluntary multinational naval partnerships to use all necessary means, in and around the Strait of Hormuz to “secure transit passage and to repress, neutralise and deter attempts to close, obstruct or otherwise interfere with international navigation through the Strait of Hormuz”
Resolution 2817, which was passed earlier this month and condemned Iran’s attacks on GCC States and Jordan, was also tabled by Bahrain
Street tree canopies can cut road surface temperatures by 10–25°C and reduce ambient air temperatures by 2–5°C. For pedestrians and bus commuters in hot cities, shade isn’t cosmetic urbanism; it’s critical climate infrastructure🌳🚌.

To remain silent would be to accept an authoritarian future in which no one is safe from state excesses.
We refuse to accept that future.
This is the final stage. Where “by that time there was no one left to stand for me” comes true. Over a decade on *tweets* in a county where the son of judge goes free after killing two people.
Lok Sujag website has been blocked by the authorities.
It’s opening overseas in common browsers but only through VPN in Pakistan. Experts of the field are unanimous that this happens only when Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) puts a website behind its firewall.
PTA has not issued Lok Sujag any notice in this regards.
Team Lok Sujag is in contact with legal experts and media friends and preparing a strategy.
We do, however, want to assure our readers and supporters that Lok Sujag will remain committed to its mission and its core values. We will continue to make efforts to amplify voices of the marginalized and silenced communities, ignored areas and suppressed ideas and that we will continue to abide the highest standards of journalism.
We highly value support of our readers and viewers and thank all of them.
Evidence from Ecuador reveals that central transfers to subnational governments can meaningfully stimulate local economic activity – operating primarily through higher municipal spending on wages, procurement, and small-scale investment. https://t.co/84J4W8TTwq
