When I was 18 and had just 500 followers, I took a shot in the dark.

I DM'd a CEO I admired. I wouldn't say an "idol," but tbh, pretty close.

This guy ran a publicly traded fintech app. I told him I wanted to collaborate.

To my shock, he replied in 2 minutes: "Meet me in my office tomorrow."

Mind blown. Didn’t expect a reply, let alone an invite.

I knew I couldn’t just show up and say, “Hey, can I pick your brain?”

So, I pulled an all-nighter.

I dissected his entire app, and put together a deck with 20 ideas on how build a community to supercharge his business and how to boost his app’s conversion rates.

Walked into his skyscraper office with my deck. His assistant said, “You have 20 minutes.”

Heart pounding. Showtime.

I made it all about him, his app, his vision.

But inside, I craved his take on my life, my app, and whether I should drop out of school.

I was surprised by how much I learned just by watching his reactions.

His insights on product, marketing, business, and life were invaluable.

Unexpectedly, making it about him taught me more than I could’ve imagined.

At the end I got the validation I wanted: “This is really helpful. Thank you.”

As I left, he said, “Come back tomorrow with more ideas.”

And I did.

Why am I telling you this? Because I'm just reflecting on a Saturday afternoon over a nice coffe that 1 bold DM can change your life.

Life’s too short not to shoot your shot. You don't need 1M followers. You don't need to be a well-known founder. Those are just excuses.

I’m often surprised by how receptive people are.
