Clearly it’s not hot enough on this August Bank Holiday Sunday in London, so to warm up I’m recalling giving Le Corbusier a wintry bell in Berlin.
“Est-ce que je peux avoir une unité d’habitation ici, pres du stade Olympique?”
“Non.”
“Genau. D’accord. So it goes. Cheers, la.”
@rocking_bob Hooray, Nite Flights! Always like to imagine it soundtracking how Saturday Night Fever would have started if it had been set in East Berlin and had Joh(a)n Travolta strutting down Karl Marx Allee. The Fernsehturm/TV Tower rotating like a huge Democratic Disco Republic mirrorball.
This remains the greatest Beatles documentary you can watch. Educational, joyful and fun. Once nearly missed a plane out of Berlin watching it dubbed into German. (@Howard_Goodall genius guidance remained undiminished auf Deutsch. Mach Schau!)
Ten years ago today Barry Cryer and I went onto Steve Wright's show to promote my Kenny Everett biography, Hello Darlings. He then took me to the Yorkshire Grey where we stayed for the next eight hours drinking Taddy Lager. One of the best days of my life. SO missed x
@JonathanKBall@StuffAndPiffle Aye. They know who they are those striped bastards. We. Are. Shit. Pets. Tried taking one for a walk. Fatal. As for playing “Fetch!” all they do is fetch their even more irritating mates. And they never get their round in. Always cadging your drink. Let it bee.
Popped into local library for some potential holiday reading. Found a virgin loan copy of new @StuartMaconie not so slim volume. Popped into pub for a preview perusal pint & as I walk to the bar A Design For Life starts & the Manics remind us that libraries gave us power. #timely
@edentravels By all means demolish the city’s GPW Monument amidst Putin’s evil madness but what is the point of this? Especially in such a great city where what, 1/3 of its residents speak Russian as a 1st language? (Although I suppose they probably all know where the central station is…)
As days become nights, as days & nights become weeks. No signs of life at the BBC’s best neighbour. Let’s get some cost of liver crisis coverage on that (admittedly very slowly) breaking news…
People who “reach out” to you in emails. Surely only the Four Tops are allowed to reach out to anyone? (And even then I can’t guarantee I’ll be there.)
Low water levels in Europe have revealed the "Spanish Stonehenge," an ancient Roman bridge & 20 Nazi warships sunken in the Danube in 1944 https://t.co/QpKJnKMhx0
#OtD 15 Jul 1971 the ironically named United Red Army was formed in Japan. A Maoist group, it had 29 members and it killed 14 of them in less than a year in internal purges, considering them not revolutionary enough. Here is a critical history of Maoism: https://t.co/3br2u9MhsY
