With a heavy heart, the @Play2XKO team shares an update about the future.
- Active development will end in December.
- The final content patch goes live in October.
- Servers stay online.
- In-game purchases made before August 20 will be refunded.

Complicated or not, the present situation of transactions looking and feeling like game purchases when they are secretly limited-time rentals is highly misleading. At a minimum, games that rely on remote services to remain operational should carry a standardized, unmistakable "rental only"-style label on them, so the consumer is aware it is not a purchase, and will consider whether the price of the product is appropriate in that light.
„It’s complicated“
I pay you money. I get something in return.
I’m sorry for having such a wild expectation as not being stolen from.
Fun fact: even the EU Commission itself has pointed out that we are not asking for anything that infringes IP law.
And if we were — 1.4 million Europeans, and millions more worldwide, are asking you to do something about it anyway. Remind us: who’s the sovereign again?
FULL REVIEW OF AZZAPP VS RIOT PHROXZON/DREW LEVIN
✅ = Response is good IMO
❌ = Response is bad IMO
I'd like to say there's no hate to anyone who took part, it's obviously very respectable for Riot agree to do this, as well as Azzapp to agree to host it.
(WARNING: LONG)
(The first ~40 minutes of the interview is just about matchmaking, if you want to read about Mages Bot/"Frustration balancing" and the state of Top Lane then scroll down)
LOSERS QUEUE ✅
- Very brief conversation, but they say true winners/losers queue is unlikely to exist.
- Good answer from Drew on human perception of randomness + pattern recognition.
- Later in the interview they admit they sometimes fiddle with matchmaking too much (like early this season making the need for hard reset), but no true winners/losers queue.
HIGH ELO MATCHMAKING ❌
- Riot Phroxzon: "We cannot be more and more restrictive every year with who can make it into Apex Tiers"
- I think this is a pretty bad strawman, no one is making the claim that Riot need to be more and more restrictive every year with who can be Master+.
- The opposite is true, people have a problem with Riot making it EASIER AND EASIER every year to reach Master+ (50,000 Master players now)
- Loss of prestige of Apex Tiers is people's problems, Phroxzon doesn't address this at all and instead strawmans a completely different argument.
- No pushback by Azzapp on this.
- Riot Phroxzon validly mentions Master+ LP being too high/sparse as a concern (Good)
-Says Riot's solution to this is to add more tiers above Master.
- While this is a good idea, does nothing to address the # of people in Master tier, and it's lost prestige.
- Good response from Azzapp, "Endlessly adding more ranks isn't sustainable, need a real solution."
- Riot Phroxzon avoids this question, repeats "We can add more ranks to higher elo to display skill", but does not address core concern that Azzapp stated.
- Would have liked to see some pushback from Azzapp to get a real answer to this question.
HARD MMR RESETS ✅
- Azzapp makes argument hard MMR resets (like the one early this season) are GOOD and he would like to see more of them.
- Think this is a terrible take, a constant complaint of high elo right now is how unbalanced matchmaking is, multiplying this tenfold on a regular basis is a terrible idea imo.
- Phroxzon + Drew push back on this pretty hard (Good)
MMR AND SKILL LEVEL❌
- Phroxzon states that they do not want to just take into account your MMR, but also your "consistency".
- Seems deeply redundant to me, MMR already takes into account your consistency.
- A player may play 500 games a season, if they are inconsistent and play very poorly in 200 of them, their inconsistent skill level is already reflected in their MMR?
- Your MMR is an average of many many games you have played, it is fundamentally impossible for MMR to not be incredibly reflective of your consistency
- Very confused by what Phroxzon is saying here, do not think it makes sense.
- "MMR doesnt fully capture your consistency"? Yes it does, your inconsistent games are not discarded by your MMR.
- Very surprised Azzapp did not push on this as I think it's clearly non sequitur from what MMR is.
INTERVIEW NOTE ❌
- Became quite frustrated at the interview at this point.
- ~40 minutes have passed of what was intended to be a 1hr interview, and so far it's been almost exclusively about high elo matchmaking/Apex Ranks.
- "Challenger Rewards" "Apex Tier Requirements" "LP Cutoffs" "Master+ Resets"
- Zero discussion of the actual game thusfar.
- This is not Riot's fault at all, it is Azzapp's responsibility to conduct the interview.
FRUSTRATION IN LEAGUE❌
- Riot say Frustration is important to games (Dark Souls analogy, great point)
- Azzapp specficially asks about the frustration resulting from Ranged Top
- Riot Phroxzon acknowledges there are good and bad types of frustration (Great)
- Phroxzon's measure of "good frustration" :"Does it feel satisfying to overcome the frustration"
- Think this is a pretty poor test personally.
- Believe that many of the types of frustration that Riot justify in League do not pass this test either...?
- Riot Phroxzon also completely ignores the question of the frustration of Ranged Top, instead gives analogies for Fizz Midlane.
- Somewhat disappointed Azzapp didn't push on this as he directly asked the question
- The major 3 frustrations in League currently:
- Mage Bot
- Ranged Top
- Roaming Support
NONE OF THESE WERE MENTIONED OR REFERENCED IN THIS DISCUSSION OF FRUSTRATION.
Think this is obviously VERY bad?
A great thing to discuss would have been "Do the major frustrations in League right now pass Riot's frustration test?"
Not sure why none of this was mentioned at all.
MAGES BOT ❌
- Azzapp asks " Do you think Mages are overpowered"
- Phroxzon states "We do not think Mages are overpowered"
- Phroxzon's position is: "Structurally Mages have an advantage against ADCs as Burst counters them
- However "They have a downside in "They don't necessarily scale super well, like a conventional Mage trying to kill Mundo, good luck"
- I think this is a VERY VERY poor argument, "Being able to kill Mundo" is not an benchmark of scaling
- "ADCs dont scale well because they can't kill Rammus" is an equally irrational statement.
- Also many of the Mages in Botlane CAN kill Mundo lategame, like Aurelion Sol, Brand, and Veigar? (Brand/Veigar are "Conventional Mages")
- Mages obviously DO SCALE WELL INTO 95% OF TEAMCOMPS
- I think what Phroxzon is trying to say here is "Mages do not scale as well as ADCs on Average", however he has worded it VERY poorly imo.
- Also many ADCs can't deal with lategame Mundo either?
- Would have liked Azzapp to push back on some of these points.
- Phroxzon states they ARE intentionally "Injecting Mages into botlane" as they believe it will be healthiest for the game.
- Phroxzon states the main relative weakness of ADCs vs Mages in Bot is ADCs are stronger on 3+ items.
- I think this is a valid and true point for the most part, however I dont think this is a sufficient weakness for Mages.
- Tanky champs are very rare in current meta, meaning the lack of Mage DPS in the late game is not tremendously relevant
- Also being stronger for the first entire 2.5 items is VERY excessive given the proportion of the game that is decided by then.
THE STATE OF TOPLANE ✅
- Despite being by far the most liked reply to his post, Azzapp had no intention of bringing up the overall state of Top Lane in his interview (Disappointing)
- Riot Phroxzon IS ACTUALLY THE ONE TO BRING IT UP INSTEAD!
- HUGE W FROM RIOT PHROXZON FOR THIS!
- "It is difficult to balance the impact of Top vs Bot due to Bot having 2x the players"(Fair statement, very sympathetic to this reality)
- "Toplane is difficult to solve since Toplaners want to be an island with no ganks, but still want impact" (Also fair statement, very difficult problem to solve)
- Would be good to mention that Support roaming is very damaging to toplane, given part of Top Identity is low ganks?
"Many solutions do not solve the problem, and actually just make things worse" - (Fair statement too)
- "Therefore it takes a very long time"
- Would have been nice to see some specific problems Top lane faces THIS SEASON (Ranged Top, Roaming Support, and 2x Combat Summ Meta making Counterpicks far far more brutal)
- Still huge respect to Riot Phroxzon for bringing it up, shows he cares and is interacting in good faith.
That's the whole interview, it was about 1.5 hours so I tried to make it as concise as possible. Huge respect to Riot for doing this interview and being transparent.
I hope they can continue to liaise with the community in future.
Please be respectful to all involved in this interview.
