Delighted to find this smart male #WesternSubalpineWarbler at Ballinacarraige, West Beara (Cork) y'day evening - before I'd parked the car too! It showed very well at times, busily feeding out in the open fields (& along fences). Glad to have managed at least some footage of him
@peediepuss Glaucous-winged influence did cross my mind for a minute, and it's only just down the peninsula from where I found a near-adult GW Gull in January 2016 😉
A weird Herring Gull, a very dark, hefty (including bill) Iceland Gull, a Kumlien's or a hybrid, at Cahermore, Cork yesterday?? I'm honestly at a loss.. opinions welcome..
I will post some flight shots too, that I'm only just getting round to processing now..
@CarraRonan Ah thanks for the heads-up but, no, I'm not on Facebook. It would be interesting to know what those in North America make of it alright, cheers!
@peediepuss Weird indeed! You're not the first to suggest a Glauc X Herring hybrid so maybe it is one. Perhaps it'll stick around or return again next winter, with a new set of feathers...
Good to get your thoughts on it, cheers 👍🏻
@mathew_meehan Yes, I'm with you on that. Initially when it flew in I thought I was onto a nice, albeit pretty dark, Iceland but structurally it doesn't fit the bill. I'll have to keep an eye on it, if it stays. Cheers for your thoughts on it 👍🏻
@DerekCh95709555 Cheers Derek. Interesting to hear your thoughts on it. I've seen a few juvenile argentatus down this way this winter but none quite as pale as this. A nice looking gull, whatever it is...
Short video of the fab 4 #AlpineSwifts at Holy Cross church, Kenmare today. At least 2 were seen going to roost in the slatted area on the west/town side of church at 7 PM, for anyone who might be there at first light...
@Mshorten@Team_eBird @cork_birder Great stuff! They're great birds to watch. That elongated look, big bill, big, pale wing panel 👌 Found them nesting just a stones throw from my parents house, in the lower branches of this mulberry
