Education Crisis: Calls for Fundamental Change, Not Just Policy

The Federal Government has finally admitted to its poor management of the education sector. Recently, the Minister of Education acknowledged that the policy separating junior and senior secondary schools has failed to improve educational outcomes. This is evident in recent examination results. In 2024, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) reported that only 38.32% of candidates passed English and Mathematics in the WASSCE. In 2025, only 32% passed the computer-based WASSCE. This poor performance has been consistent across major examinations over the past two years.

This admission is tragic because education is the most vital contributor to human capital development, which forms the foundation for growth and economic development of any society. We cannot overcome economic stagnation without prioritising education, healthcare, and job creation to lift millions of unemployed youths out of poverty. As successful Asian nations have demonstrated, educational excellence requires sustained investment in curriculum development, motivated teachers, and better learning environments.

Unfortunately, the government continues to neglect the sector. In the 2026 budget, education received only ₦3.52 trillion, just 6.17% of total expenditure, down from 7.87% in 2025, and well below UNESCO’s recommended 15–20%. This low allocation indicates a failure to recognise education as a driver of sustained economic growth.

Education advocate, Mr Alex Onyia @winexviv , recently revealed that Nigeria failed to sponsor students to the International STEM and Mathematics Olympiads due to a lack of funding. It is heartbreaking that the government can sponsor hundreds to irrelevant international conferences yet fail to support its brightest students on the world stage.

The Minister’s admission reflects a broader failure of public leadership. The issue is not the JSS/SSS policy itself, but the lack of commitment to properly fund, manage, and deliver quality education.

In Anambra State, we proved that committed leadership can transform educational outcomes. Through effective funding, oversight, provision of laptops, generators, internet connectivity, and other learning aids, we turned the sector around. For example, our effort in providing computers across all secondary schools (public and private in the state) was recognised by HP Africa Head, who declared that Anambra had procured the largest number of laptops for school children of any subnational government in Africa.

For the future of our society, we must deliberately invest in education, healthcare, and job creation. As I have always said, failing to do the right things is equivalent to abusing society, and the society we abuse today will take its revenge on us and our children tomorrow.

But most importantly,
The Nigerian government wants you to believe that everything I just wrote here from 1-7 was done and accomplished by this random man without the government being aware, being complicit or being involved.

Do you know what it takes to open an account with CBN? Do you know what it means to have an agency inside the country’s national budget? Do you know what it implies that this budget was signed by the president?

Now go back and read those points from 1-7 again and ask yourself how possible it is that a random man will be able to do all of this without heavy compromise from top government officials. Yet this kind of improbable lunatic proposition is what this demonic APC wants you to believe.

How about groundnut and sachet water business? They should include them too.

First, they should tell us where she got such money from.

If akara, roasted corn and kuli-kuli are viable and sustainable microeconomic investments in Tinubu’s Nigeria, let the defenders of Tinubu show us members of their families that are engaged in this enterprise.

The point is not that akara, roasted corn and kuli-kuli aren’t necessary foods, the point is that we are all witnesses to how the Tinubu family has amassed wealth and captured state power to entrench and further their selfish and greedy ambitions.

We have seen the insane convoy of Remi Tinubu, Seyi Tinubu and their benefactor in Aso Rock.

It is deceitful and disrespectful for the same family that is living in opulence, amidst the ravaging and dangerous hunger in the country, to be pushing akara, roasted corn and kuli-kuli economy.

I have resisted the urge to comment on the ruling of Hon Mr Justice Dashen of the Federal High Court sitting in Lokoja on the NDC matter until I read the judgement. Having read the judgement I am just wondering why the learned trial judge agreed to set the judgement his lordship gave in December 2025 wherein INEC the only Defendant in that case was ordered to register NDC as a political party.

That order was obeyed and NDC registered as a political party. Now an association known as Peace Movement Party PMP was never a party to that judgement. So when an application was filed on the 5th May 2026, the application had two prayers. Praye on3 was for extension of time to apply to set aside the said judgement and an order setting aside the said judgment.

The learned trial judge in the ruling under review set out the two prayers in the motion in the ruling but his lordship did not consider at all prayer one that deals with extension of time to apply to have the judgment set aside. Why. Nobody can hadzard a guess. But was his lordship right. I do not think so. The principle of law is well established that where a person seeks extension of time within which to apply to set aside a judgment entered in his absence, the applicant must satisfy two conditions, namely good and substantial reasons for the failure to appear or defend the action; and show that there is a prima facie defence on the merits, usually by exhibiting a proposed statement of defence disclosing triable issues.

These two conditions are conjunctive, not disjunctive. In other words, both conditions must co-exist before the court can exercise its discretion in favour of the applicant. Failure to satisfy either is fatal. The Supreme Court in Williams vs Hope Rising Voluntary Funds Society held that an applicant seeking to set aside a judgment entered in default must: show good reasons for the default; and disclose a defence on the merits.

In fact the first hurdle must be crossed before a consideration can be given to the second question. The discretion of the court is exercised only where both requirements are met. In Nalsa & Team Associates vs. NNPC, the Supreme Court reaffirmed that the applicant must satisfy the court as to:
the reason for the default; and
the existence of a defence raising triable issues. In Skenconsult (Nig.) Ltd. vs Ukey,
even though principally dealing with judgments entered without jurisdiction or without service, the Supreme Court also distinguished cases where the court's discretion to set aside a regular judgment depends upon the applicant satisfying the recognised conditions.

In A.C.B. Plc vs Losada (Nig.) Ltd, the Supreme Court reiterated that a party seeking to set aside a regular judgment must explain the default and show a defence on the merits. In Macaulay vs. NAL Merchant Bank Ltd the court emphasized that both conditions are prerequisites before discretion can be exercised. Are these conditions conjunctive or disjunctive? The authorities consistently state that the conditions are conjunctive, not disjunctive.

The applicant must establish both: good and substantial reasons for the failure to appear; and a defence on the merits. The use of the word "and" in the Supreme Court decisions is deliberate. The courts have repeatedly refused applications where only one condition was established.A commonly quoted statement of the law is that the applicant must show good reasons for his absence and disclose a defence on the merits before the court can exercise its discretion in his favour.

In this ruling, his lordship left out most fundamental judicial function and did not interrogate the reason for failure to apply to have the judgment set aside before INEC obey it. The court did not give us the opportunity what informed its reasons to set aside the judgment when there is no finding on the point why the applicants waited till 4th May 2026 before they apply to set aside the judgment. It appears there are more the public did not know.

14. His wife had no office or budget to mess with the state. She had her enterprises in UK.
15. Obasanjo had to come to Onitsha and spent 1-week bcos of the peaceful environment.
16. He invited EFCC to come and audit his administration, before handing over.
17. He refused to accept land, gratuity & pension like other governors.
18. He never went close to State Govt House after handing over.
19. He didn’t try to frustrate his successors policies.
20. Till today, he kept gifting multi-millions to Schools, Healthcare development, and entrepreneurship developments.
21. He even work as Chairman of SEC at the national stage without pay.
22. He paid off the pensions and gratuity owed retired workers in Anambra state.
23. He placed all old people on the station free medical and monthly salary.

If you are sincere and your definition of leadership is right you won't be against Peter Obi.

I write not to persuade anyone nor to make you feel I owe you an explanation, far from it. I write only because I can write and certain issues concerning my principal concerns me.
I have read different posts that represent different thoughts and I feel a lot of these thoughts are misguided and misleading. If at this point, a person still needs an interview to form an opinion about Peter Obi's intellect, then not much attention needs to be paid to such a person.
I have witnessed elections in Nigeria and I have seen candidates come and go but one thing that is different in today's Nigeria is the fact that for the first time, we are seeing a candidate who comes to Nigerians and the world at large as who he is. He is not pretending, he is not lying and he is not acting. He simply comes to you as @PeterObi .
More than any other candidate, this man has been scrutinized and almost stripped bare naked. Some people are so obsessed with him that if they could know the size of his scrotum, they wouldn't mind verifying it's veracity.
Peter Obi despite not being the president has done more for modern Nigeria than even the president. Just last week, he was at the EU, addressing delegates., the next day he is in another continent. He works round the clock to prove to the world that it is not yet gloom for Nigeria and that there is still hope.
While many people would like to judge him as regards the @ruffydfire interview, I feel the man didn't do badlyand all that we are seeing are just attacks by pained political enemies. When you come up with vague excuses like 'Perer Obi likes deflecting', the question to you is, all the questions he has answered in the past, what was the outcome? His ideas have been stolen and his policy statements used by the same people in government. A good example is the issue of Band A. He gave a brief about it in an interview and now it has been adopted without him getting any credit. So if the man has decided not to let the cat out of the bag anymore, kindly let him be.
There is no way, you can claim a man who speaks with delegates in European union and gives lectures and addresses in ivy league universities has a low IQ. It is basically impossible to state such except you are an imbecile yourself.

More than any politician in modern day Nigeria. Peter Obi has constantly put himself out there. Plain and simple for people to see. Those who love him, knows who he is and those who just dislike him will continue on the path of mischief. But only time separates the chaff from the wheat perfectly and may time wrought judgment on all those who peddle lies against the man known as Peter Obi.
