On innovation for Monitoring Control and Surveillance under the new EU Fisheries Control Regulation:
👉 information must be collected across the entire #SupplyChain, from industrial fleets to small-scale fishers
👉 it's in the interest of the fishing community to convey as much information as possible to all types of consumers
👉 consumers need this information wherever they buy their seafood - from the supermarket to restaurants, cafés and self-service outlets
👉 #traceability is key: any certification/labelling scheme is meaningless without the ability to trace back to the source
👉 prepared, preserved, processed, fresh... all seafood products matter!
Technical session 2 identified some key barriers to digital traceability along the #SupplyChain:
- lack of infrastructure, lack of standardisation, lack of interoperability
- lack of education & awareness about the need for traceability
- lack of clarity on benefits of digital traceability across the supply chain
- perceived effort to implement digital traceability among all actors
- ensuring accurate data collection and sharing
& some solutions to overcome these:
➡️ Collaborate across the entire supply chain
➡️ Boost trust among supply chain actors and consumers too
➡️ Educate and increase awareness around different actors ( 🔑 for consumers)
➡️ Reduce burden & effort through effective implementation
🚨 1/2: A new study out today in @ScienceAdvances maps the overlap between fishing vessel activity and the distribution of top marine predators in the northeast Pacific Ocean, illuminating the hidden risk of unseen fishing vessel activity due to gaps in #AIS data.
🛰️ By combining satellite technology with state-of-the-art #MachineLearning, we teamed up with research partners to map previously undisclosed industrial activity at sea.

Days after his 80th birthday, a statue of Max Boyce was unveiled today in his hometown of Glynneath. He said: "It brought to mind an old saying 'A man's true worth is measured by how he's perceived in the square mile to where he lives' and this has come true for me". Legend 🏴
Slightly different office this morning! Thank you to @iflos_org for the opportunity to participate at the terrific event today on Human Rights at Sea. Super speakers and I learned a lot, and always lovely to see friends and fellow law of the sea geeks!
